For years, ghosts and poltergeists have been a part of our popular lexicon. From stories told around the campfire, to motion pictures like The Haunting, to books like the Scary Story series, everyone has heard a good ghost story or two. Many people claim to have actually been party to a few supernatural experiences themselves. But for as long as we have told these frightful stories, science has been attempting to explain them beyond the typical bump in the dark.
This investigation into the paranormal eventually evolved into the field of parapsychology. Current research in parapsychology has three focuses: psychokinesis (PK), extrasensory perception (ESP), and survival-after-bodily-death experiences. Psychokenisis is direct mental interaction with objects animate or inanimate. Extrasensory perception is a general term for obtaining information about events beyond the reach of the normal senses ("Parapsychology FAQ"). Survival-after-bodily-death is the investigation into events and phenomena dealing with life after death.
In this paper, I intend to look at parapsychology and the study of survival-after-bodily-death. This area of parapsychology is perhaps the most recognizable, yet also the least investigated. I intend to look at the rise of this field of inquiry as a science, the arguments for it and against it, and why survival-after-bodily-death is not as prominent a field as it once was.

If death is really real, based upon the animistic quality of our five physical senses, then how do we know that we are truly alive and breathing, not in a dream? Near Death Experiences is a controversial phenomenon that has been debated among researchers, physicians, and the general public. The debate is whether or not what people think they experience is real or if it can to be explained by science. There are twelve characteristics of these experiences that are frequently experienced across the board including out of body experiences which lead to the questions: Does the conscious require the brain, or is it a separate entity that can exist and function on its own? Is there really life after death? Skeptics will answer in the negative and offer many possible explanations, but I can find no good explanation that can account for many of the experiences people have during an NDE.

This spiritual branch of psychology was known to the Greek philosopher Aristotle as the science of metaphysics. We are told by him that, "the spirituous body either undergoes a certain breakdown or, by being out of symmetry, troubles and hampers understanding"... mental derangement and dulling of the understanding of man is due to changes in the spirit. That academic psychology would backtrack to seriously consider the hypothesis of the "spirit-body" and the metaphysical nature of man in the 20th century seems absurd. The thrust of parapsychology, however, appears inexorably driven in the direction where contemporary science, philosophy and religion blend into a single universal understanding, enabling man to know himself in the fullest context. Without experiencing failure, it is possible that Thomas Edison may have never become America’s most well-known, outstanding and productive pioneer. Edison is recognized as being the godfather of all inventors and is viewed as an iconic symbol in the field of discoveries. His journey to success, however, was met with many obstacles and road blocks. His brilliant mind kept working despite the challenges faced and ultimately resulted in the development of the enhanced incandescent light bulb. This discovery was a prime example of the creative problem solving process at work and became the icon behind the name Edison. In 1878, Edison began his attempt to build an electric light on the premise of coiled platinum wiring. The project was quickly abandoned after he encountered one single problem; the filament would fall apart after a short time. Edison identified the raw roots of this problem as being directly related to the uneven resistance of the current that flowed through it. This underlying failure revealed a truly curtail discovery. It proved that the filament must be composed of continuous fibers that would have the capacity to handle the current that flowed through it.
