After decades of tests, documentation, and research, some scientists believe that consciousness can prevail even after the body has died. A near-death experience (NDE) is an unusual experience that takes place on the brink of death (Greyson, 2000) and usually involves an out-of-body experience or a vision of a tunnel of light. Although it can be difficult to prove that a near-death experience has occurred, there are tests that provide undeniable evidence that an NDE has taken place. An unbelievable 3% of the world’s population has had an NDE (Choi, 2011). That is an incredibly high percentage when considering that 7 billion people inhabit the Earth. A lot of those people have recounted their experiences and provided absolute proof that their experience took place. These reports have only strengthened the argument that NDEs actually happen and supports the most significant question about NDE research: Can consciousness survive bodily death? Science has proven most phenomena that occurs in everyday life, and has also, for centuries, concluded that nothing occurs after one dies, when in fact, consciousness can prevail, even after the body has experienced conventional death. This can be proven by research conducted to determine what a near-death-experience is, documentation on these experiences by their experiencers, and tests to verify that these experiences have actually taken place. Before studies of near-death experiences begin, scientists and doctors first have to understand what they are. So, what are they? A near-death experience is an unusual experience that takes place on the brink of death and usually involves a variety of components including an out-of-body experience (OBE) or a vision of a tunnel of light. If the patients can describe the images after coming out of cardiac arrest, it will provide evidence that they had an out-of-body experience. Through research conducted to determine what a near-death-experience is, documentation on these experiences by their experiencers, and tests to verify that these experiences have actually taken place, it is clear that consciousness can indeed survive bodily death. Many experiencers have told veridical stories about their NDE and it is safe to conclude the fact that they actually happened. Many studies, similar to AWARE by Dr. Sam Parnia are underway see how the brain functions during an NDE. The research and tests that have already been performed have been breakthroughs for NDE research.
The video Round Trip, The Near Death Experience is an interesting and informative documentary. Five people were interviewed about their near death experience. Catherine was sick for several years; John almost drown from scuba diving, Mary had complications during childbirth, Alena was in an accident and Allan’s heart flutter during surgery. These five people near dead experience were similar. It is remarkable to hear them speak about their experience and how they are not afraid of death. The near death experience changed their lives. In the United States and worldwide people have different culture, beliefs and attitude about death. Over the past years, death is an emotional and controversy topic that is not easy to talk about. Everyone have a different definition of what is death and when do you know that a person is really dead. In the book Death, Society, and Human Experiences by Robert J. Kastenbaum demonstrates that you are alive, even when doctors pronounce you dead.
If death is really real, based upon the animistic quality of our five physical senses, then how do we know that we are truly alive and breathing, not in a dream? It has been proposed that people aware the existence of surroundings majorly rely on their five senses, which may cause illusions. The ethereal, yet grounded, theory of existentialism provides the landscape for a more positively identified pathway which reaches across the separation exists among humans.
It had been reported that, “Numerous people have told of hearing their doctors or other spectators in effect pronounce them dead” (Moody Jr, MD, 2015, p. 17). This is an out of body experience. Each reported feelings of peace and quiet, which transitioned into a bad buzzing noise. After proceeding through a tunnel, they have an “encounter with a very bright light” (Moody Jr, MD, 2015, p. 51). Questions resound around a reflection of their life, what they had learned during it, and if it was worth it. Invariably, each of the subjects’ encounter a border at which they are told they need to go back. “Considering the skepticism and lack of understanding that greet the attempt of a person to discuss his near-death experience, it is not surprising that almost everyone in this situation comes to feel that he is unique, that no one else has ever undergone what he has” (Moody Jr, MD, 2015, p. 83). Naturally, the outcome of this experience has an effect on the lives of those experiencing it.
The mind is a very powerful tool when it is exploited to think about situations out of the ordinary. Describing in vivid detail the conditions of one after his, her, or its death associates the mind to a world that is filled with horrific elements of a dark nature.
For some, coping with death is the end of a journey, but to others, it is the beginning of change. The novel, The Hero's Walk, explores the meaning of this statement through the death of Maya. Because of her death, the people who are close to her, such as her father, Sripathi, begin to suffer. However, he eventually experiences a positive change after coping with her death. In Anita Rau Badami's novel, The Hero's Walk, Maya's death is a major turning point which affects the life of Sripathi; ultimately, this loss contributes to his major character development.
Near Death Experiences is a controversial phenomenon that has been debated among researchers, physicians, and the general public. The debate is whether or not what people think they experience is real or if it can to be explained by science. There are twelve characteristics of these experiences that are frequently experienced across the board including out of body experiences which lead to the questions: Does the conscious require the brain, or is it a separate entity that can exist and function on its own? Is there really life after death? Skeptics will answer in the negative and offer many possible explanations, but I can find no good explanation that can account for many of the experiences people have during an NDE.
The concept of brain death is not something that can be easily determined at just a glance. It is an intricate course of tests and time to determine if the process of brain function is evident. An important series of questions to ask yourself is, “what constitutes brain death,” “how is it defined, “and “what happens afterwards?” Brain death is not to be confused with a coma because they are entirely different. Organ donation is the most common outcome of someone who is diagnosed brain dead. If this occurs first hand to you or your family member, would you go out of your way to determine if the doctors were correct? This essay will explain the tests that are performed on the body that is thought to be brain dead, the difference between brain death and a coma, and how families could possibly handle the results of a person being determined brain dead.
She never really talk about them but simply assumed that this happened to everyone while they slept. But that wasn’t the case. Miss Z brought up the experiences to a couple of her friends as a teenager and realized they didn’t experience that at all. Her friends looked at the experiences as “queer” experiences, so Miss Z stopped talking about them. Sometimes, Miss Z didn’t just float above her body. When she was about fourteen, Miss Z had a “nightmare” where was walking in a deserted area in her hometown. However, she felt like she was in someone else’s body and wearing their clothes. She noticed that someone was following her. This person finally caught up with her and stabbed her to death after raping her. The next day a story just like what she dreamed was in the newspaper. The first night in the lab, Miss Z didn’t have any OOB experiences. On night two, Miss Z said she had an out-of-body experience at 3:14 a.m.; however, she didn’t get high enough to see the target number. Miss Z reported another OOB experience on the third night. Nearly every health care professional has experienced a situation dealing with death or dying. This tends to be a tough topic for many people, so health care professionals should take caution when handling these matters. Healthcare professionals not only deal with patient issues but also those of the family. Some of the controversies of death and dying many include; stages of death and dying, quality of life issues, use of medications and advanced directives.
Death is the one great certainty in life. Some of us will die in ways out of our control, and most of us will be unaware of the moment of death itself. Still, death and dying well can be approached in a healthy way. Understanding that people differ in how they think about death and dying, and respecting those differences, can promote a peaceful death and a healthy manner of dying.

The thought of death is far beyond any living person’s grasp. When people that are living think about the concept of death, their minds go to many different places.
