In the book Treasure Island written by Robert Louis Stevenson Long John Silver is a character that stands out. Long John Silver is a former pirate who lost his leg who is now posing as the ship's cook. He is a clever, smart, dangerous and adventurous character. He is best represented by this flag because it has a wounded heart to represent his dangerous side, crutches to represent that he is disabled but he is also mobile and an hourglass to represent his swiftness and cleverness. The first aspect that makes this a good representation of Long John is the wounded heart. The wounded heart represents Long John because it means imminent danger. When Long John Silver kills Tom after he stood up for Alan, who Long John had just killed, he showed danger and ruthlessness. ‘ “You’ve killed Alan, have you? Kill me too, if you can. But I defies you.” ‘ this is what Tom says to LJS right before he killed him. The crutches represent Long John Silver and his mobility even though he is disabled. One example of Long John overcoming this barrier is when there is no treasure in the pit and the three other pirates are ambushed and run away. Then Long John has to hobble a long way to get to the cave. ‘ This was a run of eight or nine miles. Silver, though he was almost killed already with fatigue,’ this shows that he was able to keep going even though he had only one leg. Another example of Long John Silver being mobile is when the pirates were hunting for the treasure and they had to walk for a while and Long John was leading the pack the whole time. The crutches are a good representation of LJS because it shows that even though Long John is crippled he can overcome
