Due to the increasing global temperatures, and the apparent threat of climate change to the Earth, many countries are switching to renewable energy sources to reduce the carbon footprint. In Australia, there is still debate over whether the country should invest in renewable energy, or whether we should keep using coal. While many see the benefits of environmentally friendly power and reduced carbon emissions, others argue that going renewable will damage the Australian economy, as coal mining and exportation is a major source of income. In his opinion piece, Reality check, Malcom: you’ve already lost the war on renewables, Mark Wakeham argues that the Government should support renewable energy. Published in The Age on the 10th of March, 2017, this opiniative article aims to persuade Australian voters, and those supportive of renewable energy, that the Government is preventing the country from advancing in the fields of renewable energy.

However, it is evident that the editor has cropped the bottom of this photo to eliminate the rest of the factory. The white clouds of smoke coming from the factory contrast with the bleak background, thus drawing the initial attention from the buildings to the emitted smog. The visual presented supports the authors claim that “there’s no doubt the coal, oil, and gas lobbies are powerful” and that “Powerful industries will always have their political backers.” However, throughout the piece, the author intends to pressure the Government to shut coal powered stations down. The combination of both of these arguments compels the reader to believe that a change can be made, and positions them so they oppose the views of the powerful industries still supporting coal generated
