Also, they have been sued because of the mass shooting in 2012 at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Connecticut. Moreover, when the president Donald Trump was elected the sales of the guns has declined. However, when Barack Obama was president the sales of the gun surged to record levels in 2016 (Smith A, 2018, February 12). Woop woop! Is the common sound heard in Beecher Terrace (housing apartments). There are 2.3 million people locked up in the United States. Kentucky spends about fifteen billion dollars per year incarcerating individuals from Beecher Terrace. Since the 1970’s the number of people locked up in the United States has grown from 300,000 to 2.3 million. Kentucky has been the center of this prison expansion. Charles McDuffie, Christel, Demetria, and Keith Huff all have something in common. Each of these individuals are repeat offenders, grew up or lived in Beech Terrace, and have some type of mental issue.

According to an article published by The Guardian: Web Edition Articles, the shooter who killed 59 people and wounded 527 in the Las Vegas shooting qualified as a “super-owner” which is someone who owns between 8 and 140 guns. Two senators, Joe Manchin and Pat Toomey, sponsored a bill that would mandate universal background checks for gun purchases, including at gun shows and on the internet. 84% of Americans favored this law. After initial negotiations over the bill, the National Rifle Association opposed the bill and claimed that it would lead to a national gun registry. Four Democrats defected and not enough Republicans got onboard so the legislation failed. “The gun lobby and its allies willfully lied about the bill,” Obama said in a Rose
McMahan, the author of the New York Times editorial, includes why the United States should rid private ownership of guns completely or as much as possible. He explains tactful points as to why guns cause more bad then good when privately owned. “When most citizens are armed, as they were in the Wild West, crime doesn’t cease. (McMahan)” Allowing anyone to receive gun ownership is the same as putting a helpless baby in a lion’s den. Prior to the editorial an accident occurred in Newtown, Connecticut at Sandy Hook Elementary School. Twenty year old Adam Lanza, killed his mother and then grabbed three privately owned guns from his house. He later went to Sandy Hook elementary school where he shot and killed twenty kids age’s six to seven as well as six adults. Once approached by officers Adam Lanza took a shotgun and killed himself. "It's horrible. It's really ho...
Due to recent shootings in four cities gun control legislation has become a big issue throughout the United States. Government officials have presented legislation for gun control to help reduce mass shootings; however, even with these suggestions for strict gun control twelve states have already passed laws that offer fewer limitations for gun possession. After the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in 2012, Connecticut passed a law to ban gun sales that hold large amounts of ammunition. According to McLeod “in Newtown, Connecticut, the families of ten out of twenty children killed in a December 2012 massacre at the Sandy Hook Elementary School have sued a North Carolina-based gun manufacturer, alleging Remington Outdoor Co.’s Bushmaster
In Connecticut, gun laws were strengthened following the mass shooting of 6 adults and 20 children in their school in December 2012. Similarly, Colorado strengthened its gun control laws following the 1999 mass shooting that occurred at Columbine High School. Before the shootings, there was a loophole in the law that allowed the sale of guns at gun shows without any background check. This loophole was effectively sealed when Colorado voters approved a measure that would mandate compulsory background checks for gun purchases, even at gun shows.
Over the years some of the reasons to own guns have changed. As Americans moved west fulfilling Manifest Destiny, making new towns along the way which were far away from any established law. These people made laws through the barrel of a gun. Of course crime still happened, but not nearly as often, when the townspeople simply hunted down and shot the criminal. Eventually, police forces arose in the Midwest, and fewer people carried guns with them on the street but they were still there, visible or not.
On December 14, 2012 Alex Lanza used a Bushmaster AR-15, he killed twenty, first graders and six adults. (Fired Up) Alex Lanza did not have a permit to carry a concealed handgun; there is no knowledge if he had proper training. (Clint Best) After Lanza committed this horrible act of violence people started to push the gun control laws more furiously. Lanza was thought to have asperger’s syndrome but this was never confirmed. Lanza opened the door for many gun lobbyists and vice versa for the gun control advocates.
In “Reporting the News” by George C. Edwards III, Martin P. Wattenberg, and Robert L. Lineberry, the main idea is how the media determines what to air, where to get said stories that will air, how the media presents the news, and the medias effect on the general public. “Reporting The News” is a very strong and detailed article. The authors’ purpose is to inform the readers of what goes on in the news media. This can be inferred by the authors’ tone. The authors’ overall tone is critical of the topics that are covered. The tone can be determined by the authors’ strong use of transitions, specific examples, and phrases or words that indicate analysis. To summarize, first, the authors’ indicate that the media chooses its stories that will air
When gun control started to become the controversial topic, the government did not realized that gun control is costing the states, literally. The NRA-ILA list several companies that have relocated due to gun control
So why is gun control such a hot debate? Perhaps to answer this question it would be important to look at some key statistics concerning handguns in our society. In this nation, where nearly half of all US households own at least one gun, nearly 30,000 people die from a gunshot each year (Dahl). From this alone it is no wonder gun control is such an important issue, however as bad as this may seem, the number of firearm related incidents have decreased over the years. In the early 1990’s the number of people killed or wounded by firearms soared. Since 1993 however the US has seen a steady drop in deaths due to firearm (The Lancet). Fatal firearms accidents have declined as well, nearly 40 percent in the last decade, and are now at the lowest levels ever recorded (Poe). So why the sudden drop? Antigun advocates would like to attribute this to an increase in gun control laws while pro gun advocates point to a decrease in unemployment rates along with other social factors.
People always want what they cannot have, take away guns what is to stop people from buying them through an illegal source. They did try something similar to that with the war on drugs and all that has lead us to packed prisons for non violent offenders. In the article “Gun Control: exploring the issues” Dan O’Brien and Betty Stanton discuss the issues that by just tightening gun laws there will always be a way to get firearms, it won’t be legal but it will still happen. O’Brian and Stanton say “ Those who are willing to murder already demonstrate a disregard for human life and the laws associated with a balanced society.” (O’Brien) If the person involved in the mass shooting was a law abiding citizen then what would the motive for the killing of innocent people be. This article also talks about how mass media coverage has glamorized this subject and how it is effecting youth in America
The United States has a long history with the establishment of gun control laws. In 1791, the 2nd Amendment to the U.S. Constitution was ratified, declaring “the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.” New York passed the “Sullivan Act” in 1911, which allowed someone to purchase a gun with a permit required. This was just the beginning. In 1934, Congress passed the “National Firearms Act” which gave someone a $200 tax on gun sales requiring guns to be registered with the treasury. the “Gun Control Act” was passed in 1968, outlawing mail order sales of rifles and guns. Also, Bill Clinton signed the “Violent Crime Control” and “Law Enforcement Act” into law in 1994, which banned the manufacture and sales of assault weapons. The Supreme Court in 1997 declared background checks of the “Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act” unconstitutional which has left a huge impact on society, in which guns are getting in the hands of people with mental illness. Overall, gun control laws have had a long history with the United States, with much more to come.
In 1994, Congress passed the Federal Assault Weapons Ban which eliminated the manufacturing of certain assault rifles for private use (Plumer). This bill expired in 2004, though, and was never redrafted. Many mass shootings in the last few years, especially ones at Virginia Tech, a movie theater in Colorado, and Sandy Hook elementary school in Connecticut have stirred up pressure to pass a new bill. Following the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut last December, California Senator, Dianne Feinstein, drafted a bill to potentially ban the sale, transfer, manufacturing, and importation of assault rifles. This bill includes a ban on semiautomatic rifles, pistols, shotguns, and handguns. Additionally, it bans 157 other specifically-named firearms and certain ammunition feeding devices (Feinstein). Excluded from this ban are registered weapons at the date of the bill’s enactment and assault weapons used by military, law enforc...
