Good afternoon class, today I will be discussing my chosen theme of prejudice and racism from the movie Remember the Titans. The scene I have selected is Gerry 's funeral, the final scene which concludes the movie. Gerry 's funeral displayed how not only the team, but the community of the Titans has overcome their differences regarding racism and prejudice. The three film techniques integrated throughout the scene I will be discussing are the developed use of a high angled shot showing the crowd, mid-shot of both coaches (Boone and Yoast), and a close up shot of two African American and white hands which are held together. This shot is displayed towards the beginning of the scene, as Sheryl concludes her voice-over. Yakin has utilized this film technique is because he wants the audience to capture the immense amount of people who attended Gerry’s funeral. The camera shot in this scene personifies the integration and unity between both African American and white, even after a decade. By applying a close up shot, this draws the audience 's attention straight towards the integration of races. This shot is highly effective as it indicates its importance as it signifies the coming together of races, by the friendship and respect formed, overcoming what was a racist community. The camera then slowly moved upwards, revealing the two hands who were holding hands. These hands were Mrs. Bertiers and Julius, two very dear people to Gerry’s heart. The significance of the holding of the hands, demonstrates how Gerry’s mother has put aside the differences when regarding race, as she now has understood the impact and negativity of racism, resulting in the friendship of Gerry’s former best friend Julius. This scene has taught the viewers that as time has evolved, society is becoming more aware of negativity of racial prejudice and now understands that African Americans deserve equality, as there only difference is there skin
