A 2000 film, Remember the Titans, is based on a true story. This movie portrays an African American Coach Herman Boone played by Denzel Washington and a successful Caucasian high school coach Bill Yoast played by Will Patton. This movie takes place during period when schools in Virginia were segregated. It wasn’t until the early 70’s when a federal mandate came into play requiring that two schools in Alexandria, Virginia integrate its students. As a part of this change, the Alexandria school board had also decided to hire on an African American football coach, Herman Boone.
Boone and his family relocated to Alexandria, Virginia from North Carolina when Boone was first offered an assistant coach position at T. C. Williams High School in 1971. After accepting the assistant coach position and moving his family to Alexandria, the school board decided to hire Boone as the head coach instead. At first Boone was hesitant to take the head coaching position. Boone felt that it would be wrong to take this position out from underneath another man, as the same thing was once done to him in the past. The town members did not like the idea of an interracial football team. The Titans won all of their games. As time went on, the town members began to accept the interracial football team. The town businesses even began to show their support of the Titans. However, before going to the State Championship game, one of the team members was involved in a car accident. He was paralyzed from the waist down due to the injuries he sustained in the accident. At this moment is when you truly see the team and the town come together. The Titans went on to win the State
