Identity is the foundation of your character, which can be shaped and molded by the values and beliefs of society. Identity can be perceived as characteristics that one recognizes that are unique to him or her. Identity is like your fingerprint, no two in the world are the same. The fingerprints might look like the same and someone might try to replicate them, but the truth is they are only yours. Identity builds a distinct disposition, which can be influenced by external social perceptions and internal morals. In many different cultures you have to change the way you live just to fit in. Zachary was “six [foot] one and a half inches tall, [weighed] 203 pounds, [and had an] IQ [of] 160.” His physical appearance hid his true identity. Sometimes I think that my physical identity masks my true identity. I might look like a guy who is loud and obnoxious but I think I am a pretty quiet and nice guy. I might also look like a grown adult but I am a child at heart. Zachary looked like a stereotypical man being tall and big, but the truth was he was gay. The pressure to have a stereotypical manly identity made Zachary start hating himself. Likewise, he wanted to hide his identity was because he didn’t want to be the person that goes against his religion. Zachary was brought up a Christian so he thought being homosexual is a sin. Just like Zachary, Sunny had been hiding her true identity. She had been nicknamed Sunny because “that’s just what she was.” Because of this name, she felt like she had to be happy and “sunny” all the time. When I first came to Princess Margret back in grade 8 I used to just simile all the time saying little to nothing. Then a couple of guys started calling me smiley. Valgardson, the man was bored of his life and thought he needed a change. If I were him and had everything set a family, car, and a house I would never just get up and leave. He didn’t want to live the same lifestyle for the rest of his life. If I were him I would just move to a different house, in a different province or even a different country, to get change. He goes through an internal struggle thinking he is just straight-out tired of his life and he needs a change. In order to become like the stereotypical male in the neighbourhood he is going out to, he doesn’t shave or dress up. When he pulled up to a small store, to call his wife, he sees “three young men and a girl slouch” stand on the edge of the light. In order to try to make it seem like he is like the four people, and the neighbourhood he is in, he changes his identity. I am guilty of changing my identity just to fit in with the people that live there. Back in 2010 when my family went to India we had to dress up and try look like them. If some of the robbers even saw us as outsiders they would… who knows what they would have done to us. He changed the way he dressed and how he is perceived by others.
