Much of my centered around the ability to work and the ability to be a husband or wife. Through the last three generations, the focus has shifted from education and work. My values and ethics have been given to me though my grandparents. My paternal grandmother, Maria del Jesus Aguilar, born in Mazapil, Zacatecas, Mexico. She was born in July 20, 1919. My grandmother’s family immigrated from Italy in early 1900’s looking for a better life, they settle in Zacatecas before my grandmother was born. My grandmother married my grandfather, Salvador Sierra Morelos but died at the young age of 33 years old. My father was only 3 years old when my grandfather passed away from tuberculosis. Traditions are crucial to identities in order to preserve family values. Those values shape who we are. Without heritage and traditions, we are at risk of losing sight of who we are, and eventually those tenets will perish. In “Everyday Use,” by Alice Walker, three women internalize heritage differently; Dee doesn’t value her heritage, Maggie values her family’s heritage, and, in the end of the story, Mama realized the true embodiment and the meaning of heritage.
My great-grandmother was living with her father at that time since her parents were separated. This was quite odd since family life during this time period was quite prominent. The interesting fact of the matter is that my great-grandfather ultimately lied to my great-grandmother in order to convince her to move to Mexico; he told her he was a wealthy man and owned a quantity of lands in Coalcoman, Michoacán. This false information intrigued my great-grandmother and convinced her to marry him and move to Mexico. When my great-grandparents arrived to my great-grandfather’s residency in Mexico, my great-grandmother was shocked to see that his living circumstances were not what he made them out to be. Due to the policy of the bracero program, my grandfather was only able to temporarily stay in the United States as a contracted laborer. He did not acquire his residency status until later on in
Hard work is challenging work. But why does it have to be challenging work? Because challenging work, when intelligently chosen, pays off. It’s the work that people of lesser character will avoid. And if you infer that I’m saying people who avoid challenging work have a character flaw, you’re right… and a serious one at that. If you avoid challenging work, you avoid doing what it takes to succeed. To keep your muscles strong or your mind sharp, you need to challenge them. To do only what’s easy will lead to physical and mental flabbiness and very mediocre results, followed by a great deal of time and effort spent justifying why such flabbiness is OK, instead of stepping up and taking on some real challenges.
Thinking that I was strong minded and never looking at the negatives, ones suspicions changed my whole mind setting. After an endless wait in the mournful waiting room of the hospital, my name was called. The nurse brought us to Dr. Yazay's office where he confirmed his suspicions, and so began my life with scoliosis. Since the age of eight I have been swimming. I was a competitive swimmer for nine years, and now had to deal with a life without the activities I felt defined my identity. The treatment for my scoliosis involved wearing the most uncomfortable thing in the world which was a brace. With several restrictions on my physical activity, I had an abundance of free time on my hands.
