In public speaking I learned many types of concepts, theories and terms of communication. In concepts of publicly speaking there’s, relaxation, practice, credibility, attention getters, attire, organization, volume, emotion, audience relation, and movement. In my first speech, “The any old bag speech” I quickly learned the do’s, don’ts and concepts of my speech performance. Relaxing before a speech is very important, it calms the nerves and helps you prepare for the speech instead of being completely nervous and messing up during the speech. Having this be said, relaxing is a very important thing for me to do before I go up and do a presentation. If I were to not relax and calm myself before my speech, like doing breathing exercises, I would overthink everything and mess up my whole speech because of my nervousness. For the future, if there ever comes a time that I need to present for any certain reason, I will be sure to relax and keep calm before a presentation. Practice is a major role that needs to be played when it comes to presenting. Practicing, I feel gives you more confidence in your speech, and more preparation than if you were to not practice. Rehearsing before the speech then presenting makes you seem like you actually know what you are talking about even if the only reason you know all these facts is because of study and practicing. Practicing through my speech really helps me with my presentation, if I practice enough, I feel very confident to where I wouldn’t need t a paper to look at notes during the speech. This concept is important for anything. Practicing will always help you with any future task. Credibility is important when doing a speech, making sure that you won’t take up all the credibility, either stat... ... middle of paper ... ...e, also moving arms and gestures are important, but not too much to distract the audience. Theories I learned in public speaking are in regular conversations, you get all lots of feedback and interest from the other person and in large group, and you get some or none at all. This really heightens all kinds of risks of being plain, confusing, or boring. You can easily avoid in normal conversation between just two people or a very small group who have the same interests. Also, it helps to remember that when people sit considerately without speaking, they are usually watching some sort of screen optimized to entertain them. So to ask a large, captive group to sit and listen to a speech is to make a very big demand, and you must use your time sparingly and wisely. It’s generally not the time for an argument. It is to provide an understanding and desire for the audience.
The delivery of my speech portrays a sense of calmness and seriousness. I used this style of speaking to show the importance of my subject, lack of organ donors. Throughout the presentation I used note cards as a guide and frequently made eye contact with my audience. When giving facts that I felt were important I made sure to look at the camera to show there significance. I also added my input into some of the facts to try and convince my listeners to become organ donors
Though I had some strong points in my informative speech, I still feel there was a lot I could improve upon. I could not recognize any vocalized pauses but I noticed that at certain points of speech where I would transition from one point to another, I would push my glasses up. I don’t remember if this was because my glasses were actually slipping down or because I was nervous. Also, after watching my video, I found that in the beginning of the speech I was swaying a lot, but because I was standing behind the table it wasn’t that noticeable. The one major thing I would change is my choice to stand behind the table. A person willing to step forward and speak will have a more recognized voice and that is why public speaking is one of the most vital components of leadership. Through public speaking many leaders have thrived to the top and have even gone as far as to motivating people to start world wars. Public speaking has been around for hundreds of years, which even dates back to ancient Rome with Julius Caesar. In act three of William Shakespeare's play, Julius Caesar, Mark Antony persuades the people of Rome with the use of ethos, pathos, and repetition. Mark Antony uses public speaking as a crucial weapon to convince the Roman people that the conspirators are horrible people.
Writing a speech is easy. Telling someone about a speech you have to give is easy. Practicing your speech is easy. Giving a speech is not. Through my public speaking class I learned a lot about the art of giving speeches, creating a logical outline of my speech, and a lot about the strengths and weaknesses of my public speaking ability. My overall strengths as a speaker are that I can maintain eye contact with an audience and can convey the passion I have for certain topics to my audience. My overall weaknesses are that I can get caught talking to fast, causing me to skip sentences or words, and my ability to create an outline for my speech. I will go through my informative and persuasive value speech looking at three different criteria’s, content, delivery and overall assessment, and asses myself thoroughly. Even though I do not have the audio to my informative speech, I can still assess my mannerisms and eye contact.
A: I am very comfortable when I am delivering presentations. Throughout my years in high school, I learned a couple of tips on giving a presentation. I learned that every presentation should be approached differently. The most important tip I learned was to be yourself. When I have fears, I usually listen to music to calm me down.
There are many ways to get the attention of an audience. The speaker could tell a story that is personal and on topic, along with using voice infection and variation. The speaker should also be sure that the presentation will “have interesting, relevant, and up-to-date information on the topic that is being presented” (Keogh, 2015). Visuals, such as graphs and photos or animated graphics, are also a way to get the audience’s attention. One suggestion to get the audience’s attention is to have the speaker move around, if possible, and ask the audience questions, not just stand in
For my “How to do” speech my goal was to share with the class an interesting and informative way to learn something new. Due to the speeches time limit, I knew I needed to be well prepared. I wanted to be less nervous before and during my speech. While presenting I was nervous, but I didn’t really have time for these feelings to sink in because I was focused on the information I wanted to share with the audience. I enjoyed presenting in the second group of speeches so I could see my peers different types of speaking style. In order to convey this idea towards anxious students anticipating a mentally taxing course, I’ve developed three tips to prepare the upcoming prospects for a semester of public speaking. First, it is integral that the student does all the work assigned to them within the time allotted without slacking. This will give the student ample time to prepare, making room to edit last minute tweaks and changes to the speech, as well as room to practice properly. Secondly, practice the main content of your speech as much as possible and expect to forget minor details. Once you have the important points memorized, you can always adapt on the fly to external and internal distractions. Also, try speaking aloud to a corporeal being, an audience of one is always better than an audience of none. Lastly, design each speech around a topic that you are passionate about. If you are truly interested or connected to your topic, the passion shows to your audience. Your speech will flow better when the audience believes that you believe in what you are saying. After re watching my own presentation I have noticed many different things that I didn’t think of or notice when I was originally presenting it. While watching it some of the things that I think I did well on where first my talking. This is something that I know I did better on because I did my presentation a little different from everyone else. Another thing that I think worked well for my presentation was the word to picture ratio. I felt like I did a good job not putting my entire script on the screen but enough to give the class a good summery about what I was talking about. The success of an effectively motivating public speech is no doubt the most undeniable way to persuade a mass of people. A person’s confidence, persona, and suave can carry a nation. The speeches of Brutus, Antony, and King all had some form of effectiveness, no matter how long or short. The power of public speaking is a manipulative tool that can be used for good or bad, but if the motivation is pure, anything is possible.
Throughout the semester I became a more confident public speaker. The first assignment that we had to do for our education class was to introduce our self. I practiced what I was going to say and how I was going to say it that weekend. However, when I got up to present my mind went completely blank. Throughout the course of the semester I learned what I need to have up with me when I present do that I do not blank on what I wanted to say. In the beginning when I got up to present my heart was racing and my hands were shaking. Now I make sure I breathe and tell myself that I know what I am going to talk about. So I still don’t talking in public but I feel more comfortable doing it. I need to work on being more confident when I have to present a topic. Talking to Mrs. Nealy after my mini lesson I have more confidence when I am talking about a math concept than any other topic. Throughout the semester my writing skills have greatly improved. The thing I need to work on is managing my time better so that I have more time to edit my papers.
Public Speaking is way to present thought, ideas, facts and many other things. Although, for most people it is anxiety and confusion. It is important to be an effective public speaker. Getting better at public speaking can be hard but a few ways you can do this are memorize concepts, consider your nonverbal communication, practice, and writing your presentation out. Most people have a time in their life where they must get up and present, whether it be for their job, school, or other activities. So, it is important to make sure you are confident in your abilities. There has been an ample supply of research that has shown ways to improve public speaking abilities.
Before coming United States, I spent around 18 years going to school in China. I can say, in China, we do not or at least seldom do public speaking. What we do is mostly sitting down as listeners and hearing others do their presentation. In short, we, normal Chinese students, do not have the opportunity to give a speech. However, I guess I am one of the lucky people. I was selected as the compere for many big events. Even I was not giving an entire speech, I still had the chance of standing in front of many audience. So I think I will discuss this in this paper.
In order to successfully deliver an oral presentation such as a speech, the speaker must follow certain procedures to ensure his message can be conveyed clearly. Vast amounts of research are essential in order to acquire the knowledge necessary to be able to speak about a topic comfortably and answer any questions the audience might have during the course of the presentation. Communication lessons have enabled me be able to differentiate between various types of speech. I can tell the difference between persuasive, informative, and narrative speech.
