Junior Achievement is something that I’ve greatly learned from. My experience in the classroom was heartwarming, and informative. The kids were wonderful, and they showed me how difficult teaching will be, but they also showed me how rewarding it will be. From the start of observations, I knew that I would enjoy being with first graders. The first day I was there the students were curious, and asked me various questions. Of course, the students’ being curious was something I expected. I was also nervous to meet the students for the first time. Throughout my observations I was able to watch the students grow and learn from their teacher. I also watched them learn as I taught them from my Junior Achievement lessons. While I was nervous at first, the students warmed up to me and I felt comfortable. Going to a classroom every day is something I look forward to, and this experience put that into perspective a little more. I know teaching is just as challenging as rewarding, and I’m ready to take that on. I learned several classroom tips from my cooperating teacher. He was knowledgeable about the subjects, and I was able to take away ideas. These ideas, and tips will be used in my classroom. As for MoSEP standards, I consider my strengths; Standard #2 Student Learning, Growth and Development, Standard #5 Positive Classroom Environment, Standard #6 Effective Communication, and Standard #8 Professionalism. I figured these as my strengths, because they are what I focused on while in the classroom. I think these standards are important to students’ learning, and they are something that I didn’t have trouble accomplishing. While I learned a tremendous amount of knowledge through this experience, I still have a lot to learn. I need improvement in lesson planning. Lesson planning is a big portion of teaching, and it’s something that you’ll never stop doing. I also need to learn how to deal with parents. Doing Junior Achievement I didn’t have to interact with parents, so that’s something that I’ll need to come in contact with at some point. I would like to improve in teaching techniques. A big part of nursing is reflection. Now that my sophomore year is nearly over, I can see how much I have grown and how much knowledge I received. Throughout this semester I have been faced with many thrilling experiences and frightening experiences. I have learned a lot through my gerontology clinical, pharmacology and fundamentals courses. Now that I am in clinical it seems that everything is coming together. Practicing in fundamentals and then practice on a real person has been very beneficial. Once I have performed a skill and tested out I’ve notice I am likely to remember how to do the skill again in practice. In this paper I am going to review some of the main objectives I felt were beneficial to me and will always be an important part of nursing practice.

I did the same JEP assignment as last semester. In the first semester of JEP, we incorporate power points and creative projects that involve more crafts. We also tried to do more arts and share out. I learn how effective incorporating active learning was to children. Every week, I would observed the entire class actively engaging to the activities. That made the job of the instructor easier as there won’t be any moment of dead silence due to confusion. Instead, it was more excitement to answer questions and receive feedbacks. Through that experience, I learn to construct positive feedbacks and get the opportunity to watch my students grow as individuals. It was truly a remarkable experience working with 1st graders and kindergarteners. That was actually my first time working at JEP and getting to observe the neighborhood about the USC. Neither of my parents went to college after high school. My mom got married at 18 and had my oldest brother shortly after. My dad was 4 years older, but instead of going to school, he stayed home to stay with a girlfriend. His girlfriend broke up with him shortly after, and it seemed too late to go away to college. Eventually he met my mom and they married. Though neither of them attended college, both of them are extremely intellectual. My mother raised my older brother and sister until they were 14 and 12, then she had me and my younger sister. Therefor, my mother’s job was primarily her children. My mom is very smart, and a very hard worker. She came from a family that was very poor and thus, she is a survivalist. My mother is a strong woman
Every 26 seconds one of our kids drops out of high school, that's 1.3 million students each year. The main reason for dropping out, the failure to succeed. Society puts an insurmountable amount of pressure on these kids to succeed, however this can actually be extremely detrimental to the students and children.
When we were told that we were going to have to participate in Junior Achievement I didn’t know what to expect even though I did have Junior Achievement while I was in grammar school. I didn’t know what to expect being on the other side of it actually teaching the students and not being the student since I’m use to always being the student and not the teacher because that’s basically what we were told that we were going to be teacher for the day. My group was told that we were going to have 7th graders and that kind of made me nervous because in 7th have their own opinions already and sometimes an attitude and I just thought they might not be a fan of my group or of the junior achievement program so I was kind of wishing I had a younger grade. I’m also a shy person so I was nervous going into and knowing I would have to be speaking to 28 7th graders and their teacher who does this for a living.
However, I was very excited to be there because I was thinking that I was so close to the end. I was ready for my own classroom, so I braced myself and was ready to practice my passion. For the last 6 months, my teaching pedagogy has grown and strengthened. My belief that students learned in different ways and that I had to use different strategies to meet diverse students’ needs was practiced and enhanced. The diverse population of students at the school was interesting and I have learned to accommodate and modify my lessons to meet all students’ needs.

The surveys provided told me my teaching and management style places limits, but simultaneously encourages independence. I also encourage and guide students by asking questions and exploring options. This focus is on the students’ needs and to help develop their independence. As an elementary school teacher these methods would be very beneficial to the students, because it would prepare them for the independence that they would expect when going into middle or high school. Students would learn to think more critically and on the spot, which is very useful in the “real world.” The students would be able to voice their opinions freely, whereas they cannot do so as much with strict guidance and outlines.
As I reflect on my experiences observing in three different classrooms over the last three months, I cannot express how much I have learned by being in the classroom. I began the Master of Science in Education last fall and previous to the practicum experience I had taken 8 classes. I read books, listened to the experiences of my classmates and instructors, reflected on my own education, and tried to imagine how this information was going to prepare me to face a classroom of elementary school students. While I learned theories and skills that should be known by any educator, these classes could not teach me what I most desired to know: what tangible steps could I take to correctly implement all of the correct ways of teaching.
Children are our future, and to teach them well I will focus on the educational needs of each individual child. I want to inspire each child to reach for their highest potential, to develop the necessary social skills and positive character traits to become responsible members of their class, school and community, and to encourage parents to become partners in their child’s education.I see education as a lifelong journey of acquiring new ideas and concepts. A journey that blends art and science to create a warm, welcoming classroom environment where learning is expected, encouraged and supported. I believe each student is unique. To support my unique learners, I must be aware of their strengths and growth areas through the use of personal interaction and assessment. Building trust and rapport, and showing genuine interest in each individual student is the key to being a successful teacher.
Elementary teachers face the difficult task of providing meaningful learning experiences that challenge individual students at just the right readiness level for learning to occur. Yet reality is that each student enters the classroom with a unique readiness level, prior learning experiences and exclusive interests. A single learning task assigned by the teacher is far from fitting the wide variety of student needs found in todays elementary classrooms. It is difficult to provide learning experiences for students at different levels of readiness. When students are working on tasks at their level of readiness, direction and instructions are specific to the tasks students are completing. As a class we went over what we observed at Fairview elementary. As everyone spoke of their classrooms and the teachers that they observed there was a wide variety of experiences. They ranged from “this teach was just no good, and didn’t seem to care about her student at all!” all the way to, “Well my teacher was fantastic and did a good job of maintaining order and the kids seem very interested in what the teacher was teaching”. I shared my experience and how it was a positive one and I learned a lot about creating a good lesson plan and also the logistics of maintaining class order.
