Recommended: Summary on the effects of poverty on children

Intro Many people say they want to change the world.But what does changing the world mean? And how do we go about doing that? Is changing the world ending global poverty? Is it giving universal health care to all? Is it creating lasting peace among all nations that occupy this earth? Many people have different views on what that clique means. For me, changing the world means giving every person a chance to succeed. But before we can do that on a global scale, we have to do that in our own backyard. What I mean by this, is that we need to give every child a real chance at success. This is what changing the world means to me. And this narrative tells us how I intend to do it. . Specifically, when I turned 18, it was also the time that I watched my mother enroll in the EBT program. This government sponsored program gave money to families that had little money and my single mother who worked at parole and probation enrolled in this program because her job didn’t pay a lot and she had to pay her mortgage and her youngest son all on her own. At this time, I had just started working at ihop where the conditions were very poor. I made little money, worked shitty shifts, and suffered after watching so many people refuse to tip me on such a small bill. But despite these bad conditions I knew that I had to step up, lead, and help out my family. Thus, I started to give my mother cash to help out with bills whenever I could. Just as my uncle had done with my grandmother, I knew that I had to help provide for my family. While it was hard, it taught me an important lesson about leadership, rising above adversity, and protecting the ones you love.     This past summer, I acquired an internship at Baldwin and Lyons, an insurance company in Indianapolis. Every Wednesday during my internship, a couple of employees and I would participate in a prodigious community service project, Meals on Wheels. Throughout the three months that I worked at Baldwin and Lyons, I got acquainted with some of the individuals whom we delivered to. These inspiring individuals were so grateful and appreciative that we took time out of our day to volunteer to do such a service. One elderly woman who we delivered to would sing to us as she came to the front door “good meals, good meals, good meals.” She is one woman that I will never forget. First going into this, I was elated knowing I was I getting out of the office for a few hours. I did not comprehend the fulfillment I would receive from delivering meals to the elderly and disabled. But I am pleased and proud of the work that I have done for Meals on Wheels. There is no better feeling than doing something for someone else and seeing such gratitude for something so simple. Acts 20:35 says, “In everything I showed you that by working hard in this manner you must help the weak and remember the words of the Lord Jesus, that He Himself said, 'It is more blessed to give than to receive.” (Peterson). In an effort to revisit and make a difference in my community, I have arranged that over Thanksgiving break, I work Monday through Wednesday delivering for Meals on Wheels of Central Indiana.
