Half the Sky helped contribute to my understanding of "First World privilege" a lot by not only hearing about these poverty stricken, man dominant developing nations, but also showing it. The author of "How the Other Half Lives", Jacob Riis, inscribes on the deplorable living conditions of the Progressive Era from a first-person perspective. Riis, an immigrant, police reporter, photojournalist and most importantly: a pioneer and social reformer, tells a very captivating yet appalling experience of the lower class life in New York City beginning in the 19th century. Migration and the standardization of establishments are the attributing factors to overpopulation distribution and overcrowding of living arrangements in the city.
This shows us how white people thought of African Americans as inferior, and they just wanted to dominate the society making no place for other races to express themselves. Even though African Americans were citizens of the state of Mississippi they were still discriminated against. This documentary does a great job of showing us the suffering of these people in hopes to remind everyone, especially the government, to not make the same mistakes and discriminate against citizens no matter what their race is because this will only cause a division to our nation when everyone should be
I have always believed that all races have their good and bad. Their is never going to be the perfect race. This movie definitely set a powerful message that life is not perfect for any race and that even though people are from different cultures, they are all interconnected somehow. The filmmakers did a great job at showing us that individuals should not be based on first impressions such as skin color or the social status.
This week I was able to shadow for two days, for a total of sixteen hours. On Wednesday Thursday, and Friday I spent twelve hours researching articles for my journal entry and senior project. During my days of shadowing, it ran almost exactly as it has been for the past three weeks. The day began with meeting D.L. in her office. She would review emails and voicemails for any emergent conditions and handle those properly. Next, she would print off her patient list of her patients that were in the hospital for bedside rounds. Then she would review each of the labs, any test results and notes from the disciplinary team for any problems. On bedside rounds the patients, family or caregiver members were made aware of the care after heart surgery meeting, which is required if the patient is going home after surgery. When the patient’s family/caregiver attends the meeting, it is documented in the chart of the patient. If the patient has had no family/caregiver attendance at the meeting, it is brought to the surgeon’s attention so it can be discussed with the patient and/or family/caregiver who will be taking care of the patient at home.
I’m guessing by now most of us would think that we are tolerant, open-minded and accepting of those with special needs, but what if a stranger walked into your house, while you were taking a shower. It’s an extreme act of weirdness and just plain eerie. Will you still be the tolerant, open-minded and accepting person you said you would be? Would you act reasonably towards this human being, though unknown to you, is autistic?

There, is where they held auditions for parts in the film and the poorest of locals were so thrilled to audition just to get a part in the film so they may earn the two dollars a day as an extra in the film. Film maker Costa had saved thousands of thousands of dollars by having the underpaid cast members perform labor duties which were meant to be accomplished by skilled engineers.

My view on water has not changed dramatically since taking this course, however, this is because I always respected water in many respects. I never thought water was unlimited, and I have for as long as I can remember tried to tell those around me to respect water more. That being said, some aspects of this course have made me think more about my actions and the global effects of the water crisis. There really aren’t any unlimited resources on earth, and more people need to become educated about that.
Not only does this movie deal with the issues of society, but it points to biblical scriptures that help lead us in the right direction. The biggest lesson that this film taught me was that if I put my complete faith in God, then no matter what happens, he will provide, watch over, and take care of me. I learned that expressing belief in God is not enough. I have to live everyday believing and trusting him and I have to show my trust and faith through my actions and my words.
I wanted to reflect on the field trip we took on Friday to the Grotto and to the Synagogue. As the trip got closer I tried to leave my mind open to new experiences that I might encounter on the trip. As I sure many pilgrims did before they traveled to new places. In Cousineau’s book it talks a lot about going to these holy places with an open mind, to be almost at peace within you before going. Going to the Grotto I knew it was going to be more focused on the Catholic faith, which I am a member. Going on the trip I tried no to a line myself with any faith. I wanted to go in as someone with no religion. To see how it might be different from when I went to the Grotto with my church. It was really interesting to walk around the upper garden and take in the magnitude of how big the Grotto property is.
Any person can relate to human emotion. It is human desire to long for communication because we are social creatures. Emotions are a reflexive act and they can be studied by others in order understand reactions. It is present in all living creatures and is expressed by movement and behavior. The display of sadness of another creates sadness inside your either by similar experience (Russell) or by relating to sadness as a part of your own (Stein). From my point of view, the series of Thor is one of the most impressive, one of the worthiest big-budget, CGI-laden blockbuster from Marvel Studios, which laid on the foundation of Norse mythology. Not only does Thor(2011) work as an exciting summer movie, it also contains a surprisingly deep and complex story conveying many ethics lessons about leadership and using powers wisely. Thus, critiquing Thor (releasing on May 6th, 2011), a blockbuster directed by Kenneth Branagh is of considerable importance. Thor (2011), a story about an arrogant deity fighting over Jotunheim for Asgard’s and Earth’s peace, was tempered its sweeping intense scope with wit, humor and touching moments.

One of the characters that have repeatedly taken by authors, playwrights, etc. is Peter Pan. He has been incorporated in many different movies, books, plays, etc. His influence is great among the people young and old and he has been an escape to those who listen to him.
