Why Me?
Words are used daily. Conversations occur frequently. Interpretation is key. But are you sending the right message? Single words hold so much power, but do you hold it or does the interpreter? People change words and words affect people. There will always be a speaker and a listener. The speaker needs to think about the listener when talking. If the communication between the two is mistaken it could affect the relationship. This is why I would like to teach a class on connotative word choice.
I will be teaching the class about connotative word choice. When speaking to others most people have different conversations and speak differently to certain people. Your word choice changes. You can go from a laid back conversation to a very sophisticated conversation. An example would be, person one: Hey man, how did you do on your test. Person two: I got an 80% what about you? Person one: Same. Person two: Did you know the question referring to Hepatitis B when it said the incubation period is how long. Person one: Yes, it is four to seven days. My class is a great subject to talk about. In our world we step on each other’s toes wondering if we hurt people’s feelings based on what we said, or the attitude we used. We are afraid of speaking out of turn, speaking freely, or speaking about feelings. “I don’t want to be judged.” Is what our society thinks about? What we could think instead is how do I change that feeling? How do I really sound when I talk? Answering these questions is based on body language and facial expression, or more importantly, word choice. I want to teach students to use critical thinking when in situations, to not feel ashamed, to be able to walk away from a conversation and feel satisfied that the other person understood their views and thoughts.
