Reflection Of A School Counselor

After this semester, I have found that the school counselor’s ethical responsibilities feel more real to me than they have before. This was my first semester working in a school; therefore, before all of my views were based off of what a text book or theory may have taught me. Now after having experience, the ethical responsibilities feel more personal. I feel that it is my responsibility to fulfill this ethical duty. Reflecting on what I had said at the beginning of the semester, I can honestly say that I have fulfilled each role during my practicum hours. This student had a hard time adjusting. Other peers would tease her for her differences and lead her to having anxiety attacks. In addition to her social adjusting it was clear that she needed classes, but her mother did not have a car and they did not live in walking distance to an eye doctor. Therefore, the school used outside resources to give her and her mother a ride and pay for her exam and glasses. Now this student is able to see in class. My last day at my site, we taught a lesson in her room. She was participating and interacting with her peers. Though the school counselor planned to continue to advocate for this student it was amazing to watch her grow in such a short time. Though my views have not changed about the ethical responsibilities of a school counselor, my views and beliefs have deepened. Every class my views were challenged and expanded. I was able to see others views and often directly apply what I was learning in my practicum. I have learned the importance of being aware of the standards to help me act ethically. I have also learned the importance of the decision making model and consulting to help make the most ethical decision. School counselors have a hard job, but a rewarding
