I went to the school board meeting on March 21, 2016 in Kanawha. The following people were at the council: Wayne Kronneman, Leah Deutsch, Ryan Hiscocks, Ryan Johnson, Jay Burgardt, Mona Buns, Gary Chizek, Todd Hammer, and Jon Harle. The others were mainly community member which included teachers, principals, parents and supporters. Some of the West Hancock staff included Mr. Peterson, Mrs. DeHart, Mrs. Bruns, Mr. Francis, Mrs. Gast and others. The other people who were there were parents and other community members. The first part of the meeting was the revision of the budget and presentation of the budget. This was given by Wayne Kronneman. He explained the budget of this year and how it compared to last years. I guess one other subject would be the laptops that are given to students or even all of the school districts. The laptops are not reliable at all and they cause more problems than they solve problems. I am not saying we need to buy the best or the most expensive, but it would not hurt to buy a more reliable laptop that will work and are durable. Another issue I would bring up, is probably the school lunches. I feel that we do not get enough and also we do not get the necessary nutrients and vitamins. Athletes need more food than the average student who is not active.
I think I would ever really run for school board or city council. I have really have no interest in these kinds of matters. These matters were important to me in the meeting because it directly affected me, but in the future, I don’t think I would be motivated enough to join a council or board like that. To me, I would feel no sense of accomplishment even though those decisions do matter. Maybe as I have children in the future, I’ll see the need to be in one but even then I would still be reluctant in

At times, I noticed that the mayor would have probably been more attentive hearing from irate citizens than listen to Armenta trying to get clarifications to C-5. Unexciting as the council meeting agenda items might have been, it was still fascinating to see local government at work in such an orderly, proper fashion. We may disagree on particular ordinances or agenda items, but we will do so in an appropriate way that does not disrupt the city at large, and even though the topics of discussion were mostly mundane, students should still at one point or another witness their local governments at work. Doing so leads to a greater understanding for how day-to-day city improvements take affect and how important it can be to voice your opinion and be a leader within your community.

By having school board meetings, it helps to see what the school’s needs. This is very important for the reason that this may be the only time that a concern parent or person voice might be heard. From this meeting, it was learned that the school board members are willing to help people that have concerns. An example, of this, was when the concern Pre-K parent was worried that she heard that Pre-K has been just a daycare. However, someone from the board mentioned to her that she would personally go with the parent the next day and show her how Pre-K is running during the day. This made the parent so happy because her concerns were being met. I have learned that school board members look out for the students and that they are the number one source that community members should go to if they have a concern or a suggestion to better their children’s
Then, the superintendent of curriculum and instruction decide to hold a meeting with the superintendent of business and the two directors. After getting to the real root cause of the issue being about a complaint from a principal at River Valley School, the directors explain that she is never satisfied with the work they attempt to do for her. Furthermore, an issue that occurred with the internet-based library catalog system at that school was with the provider’s server and has since been fixed. The superintendent of business is not happy about the meeting, nor the explanation for the complaint. However, the superintendent of curriculum and instruction is happy that the issue is aired out and

After reading " The Case Against High School Sports" by Amanda Ripley started to make me think. There were many strong points about how the priorities of the sports are beginning to be more important to students than their education. Another great point was that the financing and budgeting is unfairly distributed throughout school districts and is spent more on athletics and clubs and not enough on classes. And I Believe that schools should put certain restrictions on the spending and promoting or in school sports and clubs because of the major drop in national and world comparisons.
Then a council member would talk about what they recommend the council would do which was mostly emergency legislation. Each topic has a letter from the alphabet assigned to it. For example D was on the Topic of the authorization to enter into an agreement for professional engineering services relative to the Dussel/Salisbury corridor signal program modifications project. A woman called every member of the council by their last name, this is the time either they can say rather the agreed with the topic at hand with a simple yes or no. I noticed how respectful the council was with each other. They all waited for the Mayor to address them with a Mr., a Mrs., or President. They responded with a thank you Mayor before they started talking about the topic. Even though they was respectful they also like to have fun there were a few moments were they laughed. The Mayor also addressed us and explain that they were moving so fast because the topics already went from committees then administer and finally the council votes. Looking back over the course of the semester, I feel that I learned many new and interesting uses for technology within the classroom – both for classrooms that have a lot of technology and for classrooms that are limited with technology. For the majority of the class, we utilized William Kists’ book The Socially Networked Classroom: Teaching in the New Media Age (2010), which provided multiple modes of instruction that both utilized and/or created technology. One of the first things that I remember, and consequently that stuck with me through the course’s entirety, is that individuals must treat everything as a text. Even a garden is a text. The statement made me change the way that I traditionally viewed Language Arts both as a student and as a teacher, as I very narrowly saw literature and works of the like as texts only; however, by considering nearly anything as a text, one can analyze, study, and even expand his/her knowledge. Kist (2010) states that society is “experiencing a vast transformation of the way we “read” and “write,” and a broadening of the way we conceptualize “literacy” (p. 2). In order to begin to experience and learn with the modern classroom and technologically advanced students, individuals must begin to see new things as literature and analyze those things in a similar manner.
From the beginning, where we were unfamiliar with each other and became a team, my team and I had started to learn each other name and getting to know each other. Throughout each meeting, we slowly start to feel more comfortable and open minded with each other. Not only are we getting familiar with each other, each meeting that was held we progress of becoming an effective team member, we learn our strengths and weaknesses of everyone. During the meetings, we learn many concepts from the textbook, “Communicating in Small Groups: Principles and Practices” by Steven A. Beebe and John T. Masterson. There are many current educational issues. The lack of Parent involvement and support is definitely one. This is especially the case at our title 1 schools. It is a struggle to get many parents to be involved in their child’s education. Another current educational issue is the lack of support and assistance for classroom teachers. For example, there are some schools where each kindergarten and first grade has a full time assistant. I teach first grade but share an assistant with two other first grade classes. We have reading teachers, however they only serve 3-5 students at a time out of 60+ students. With class sizes increasing, it becomes more and more difficult to meet each students needs without proper assistance.
Because members of school administration are entrusted with the management of public funds, administrators must act ethically and with integrity to ensure school funds are utilized responsibly and that policies that affect the district’s financial integrity are closely examined. Therefore, policies, such as approval of expenditures and payroll, finance and goal setting, and the preparation of the budget, that directly impact the financial integrity of a school district should be carefully
I learned a few things about my school and myself in regards to this area of leadership by participating in this activity. I learned that my school asks for very little participation from the teachers and community in regards to the budgeting process. But it could be an excellent venue to review prior year accomplishments as well as decide on future objectives with these stakeholders. If I were an administrator, involving the community and faculty would not only help in maintaining awareness, but I could also use this as a way to help those who may not be directly vested in my school, but who are helping fund it through their taxes, recognize effective administration in our efforts to reduce costs and provide needed resources to the various programs. I also feel that budget decisions cannot be solely programmatic or solely monetary. There needs
Issues that I feel are crucial to address which also pertain to my particular philosophy are increasing political awareness, raising racial tolerance and acceptance, reducing child abuse and violence against women, and recycling and appreciation for our natural resources. Methods I would use in my classroom to get students involved would include community service projects, recycling drives, field trips to shelters and centers, and food and clothing drives within the classroom. Activities such as these, where students can see the changes they are making, get them motivated in a way that no general lesson can. Children need to feel the selfless satisfaction that comes from helping their fellow man. I have had many excellent teachers throughout my educational experience, some of these have been wonderful teachers that have set lessons to life.
The meeting began when the school board members entered the large group instruction room and took their seats at a panel table angled to the side of the audience. The school board consists of nine elected members from the community. The members are as follows: Paul Ridley (President), Pat Vigliotta (Vice President), Helen Cumminskey (Secretary), Carla Manion ( Asst. Secretary), Timothy Bean (Treasurer), David Feely (Board Member), Keith Hatch (Board Member), Shane Oschman (Board Member), and Joseph Troutman (Board Member). Three members of the board were missing; however because of where the seats were located I could not see who was missing. Also, the member did not introduce themselves and left before people could address them.
