National parks were seen as natural islands surrounded by bordering acitivites that had a significant impact on the ecosystems in the parks. One of the parks, that was most affected by surrounding activites was Redwood National Park. Loggers imposed an imminent treath to the parks’ trees by logging near the conserved area and consequently polluting the Redwood Creek. In 1978 Congrees authorized an expension of the Redwood National Park to include those surrounding areas. This action spiked controversy; many loggers became uneployed. Government acknowledged their lost and agreed to compensate them.
It is a sad comparison to the past John Muir, who first documented Yosemite Valley, to today’s reality. The condition of Yosemite National Park should be introduced to the American public in order to protect its historic beauty and significance, eliminate current pollution, and prevent future repercussions. The area surrounding the Cuyahoga River is notorious for being extremely polluted and industrialized. An exception to this is Cuyahoga Valley National Park. This area has a rich history and has been used as a source of livelihood, industrialization, and recreation for centuries. This rural oasis takes up nearly thirty two square miles in northeastern Ohio and is the only National Park in the state. It became recognized as an official National Park in 2000 and before was known as the Cuyahoga Valley National Recreation Area. Cuyahoga Valley National Park preserves a rural landscape along the Cuyahoga River and serves as a contrast to the otherwise metropolitan setting.
Cedar Point Amusement Park in Sandusky, Ohio boasts a rich history plus all around record-breaking modern roller coasters. Cedar Point first opened publically in 1870 as a beach house on the sandy shores where locals went to cool off and enjoy the refreshing waters of Lake Erie. Geographically, Cedar Point is a unique peninsula that is almost 8 miles in length. It has a foundation of rock and clay.
The Forest Reserve Act reduced destructive logging and preserved watersheds which led to the establishment of national forests’.
Despite protecting millions of acres of wilderness, this act provided for the numerous groups of people affected by the establishment of this law. Stipulations regarding the use of protected lands by private landowners were made. People living inside the park lands were guaranteed the right to subsistence hunting and fishing, as well as the guaranteed access to their lands. This right of access is the main concern for this argument, as it is a major management issue for park officials and land owners alike.
The average Redwood's life spans from around 800 to 1500 years. These anciet Redwoods were here when the dinosaurs roamed the earth, and 65 million years later we can now stroll through these living artifacts in coastal California.
All most all state parks were upgraded and the CCC updated forest fire methods to protect against wildlife fires.The CCC also influenced a higher public awarness and dedication to the outdoors and Americas natural resources. Which provided better safety over the wilderness and resources in goverment and state parks.
Once forests began to be viewed as beneficial, it opened up a whole new lifestyle. The forests and nature might have been an evil and scary place, but it was a place filled with resources and opportunity. Settlers began using trees and wood in a plethora of ways. Not only was it used for families own use, many began logging forests as a business; a very profitable business at that. Once wood started being used for beneficial purposes, a snowball effect occurred by the settlers to cut down every tree in sight and turn it into a profit.
Since its creation in 1916, the National Park Service (NPS) has had to balance between its two goals, which are to preserve wilderness and nature and to provide the public with access to these wonders in a monitored environment. These two goals tend to create a conflict for the NPS because as soon as one goal is given more priority than the other, the administration of national parks is harshly criticized by the public. The accusation that by allowing people to experience the wilderness, the NPS is corrupting the natural environment is very common, as well, as the criticism towards the lack of government funding to preserve nature and history. Every year, over nine million hikers and adventure seekers travel to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park making it the most visited national park in the United States. There are abundant reasons for this, but many popular reasons include over 150 hiking trails extending over 850 miles, a large portion of the Appalachian Trail, sightseeing, fishing, horseback riding, and bicycling. The park houses roughly ten thousand species of plants and animals with an estimated 90,000 undocumented species likely possible to be present. It is clear why there was a pressing interest in making all this land into a national park. My research was started by asking the question; how did the transformation of tourism due to the establishment of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park affect surrounding cities such as Gatlinburg and Sevier County, and in return, its effect on the popularity of the park?

In the middle of the 19th century natural resources were being misused by companies, americans were alarmed by this issue and congress started taking notice in the issue. Congress wanted to protect the nation's resources, during that time period Theodore Roosevelt was president, he made sure to put conservationist issue on top of the national agenda. Because of this Roosevelt achieved putting an end to wasteful use of our resources along with the help of Gifford Pinchot,Chief of Forestry. In document H, it points out that if it wasn't for forest reserves the lumber companies would have monopolized and destroyed forests just to make a quick buck. Located in sunny south florida, Everglades National Park is the largest subtropical wilderness in the United States(NPS). It’s amazing, rare, and endangered wildlife and vegetation attracts tourists from all over the world. It is even known as “The River of Grass” for its abundance of sawgrass. Unlike most of the parks studied throughout the semester, Everglades National Park lies in the Atlantic Coastal Plain with a lower elevation. Visiting this park will be personally interesting for me because it is located close by my house and I’ve always known about its interesting features, but I never really took time to visit or cherish its beauty.
