Growing up there was always a lot of talk about the Indian Reservations around my home state of Minnesota. I decided I would pick an Indian tribe from the area in which I grew up in hopes I would learn more about them, even though I have not lived in Minnesota for over twenty years. I always found it quite comical when relatives would have to go to an Indian reservation to gamble, it was something I did not understand, especially when I live in Las Vegas and see it everywhere I go. I found the Red Lake Band of Chippewa to be the most interesting to me, mainly because it is the closest tribe and reservation to where I grew up. Red Lake Band of Chippewa is located in the state of Minnesota and is the most populous reservation in the state. The reservation is located about 25 miles north of Bemidji and about a four hour car ride from Duluth, Minnesota. The reservation is located on the largest lake in the state of Minnesota. The state courts or government has no jurisdiction at Red Lake. All the laws are made by the Tribal Council and enforced by the Tribal Council and the Federal Courts. Red Lake is unique because it is considered a "closed" reservation. All the land is held in common by the tribe and there is no private property. Because of this, there are very few non-members that live at Red Lake. The tribe has the right to limit who can visit or live on the reservation. Both men and women alike are able to govern and can hold positions in the Tribal Council. In 1934, Red Lake Band of Chippewa preferred to retain a “clan-based” system of governance so they rejected organization under the Indian Reorganization Act.
