Parenting styles The world is made up of diverse groups of people who speak different languages, have different religious beliefs and different cultural backgrounds. Each diverse group has a different method of disciplining children, and a method that is accepted in one group may not be accepted in the next. It is a well-known fact that raising a child does not come with a manual, therefore it is in the parents’ best interest to do what they see fit to raise their child to become a functioning member of society. Parents play a significant role in a child’s life from the moment they are born. and Mrs. Harsh-Heart have chosen to raise their child with an authoritarian style parenting. With this, a child has no choice but to follow the instructions of their parents or face extreme consequences. Mr. and Mrs. Harsh-heart’s attempt at trying to get their child to be obedient will be affective however, in the long run, it can be detrimental to the child. Children who are raised in this kind of household often have psychological problems such as low self-esteem, depression or even anger issues. Some of these children may even believe physically hurting a person is the way to get them to abide to their demands. In adulthood, they may have no understanding of how to communicate in a mannerly fashion without being aggressive. These psychological effects may be the result of their parents not communicating with them, but only spanking them and punishing them. According to Alan Kazdan, PhD, “There is no need for corporal punishment based on the research. We are not giving up an effective technique. As time elapses, experts are attempting to denounce it as a technique that works. In my opinion, I believe it is very effective and it can be used in authoritative household. Most people I know were raised in a household of which they were not allowed to question their parents or ask why they were being punished. Into adulthood, they did not grow up to have good relationships with their caretakers, yet, they did not become violent or any of the cases that experts such as doctor Kahzan explained could occur. I strongly believe spanking should be done in a rational way rather than out of pure anger. Because in the event of a parent spanking a child while he or she is angry, it can end with the child being seriously injured. There is a vast difference between spanking and openly beating a child, which people often confuse. Beating a child is child abuse and should be regarded as such. On the other hand, spanking is merely a tap or a few taps on the hand or buttocks. It can be used as a shock factor when the child is misbehaving, and it can be used to bring them back to reality.
