A Career in Radiology Radiologic technologists or radiographers perform imaging examinations, such as x-rays, which are then interpreted by a radiologist to diagnose a patient. To become a radiologic technologist you must complete an associate's degree program and obtain the licensure for that state. Some important qualities include being detailed oriented, interpersonal skills, math skills, physical stamina, and technical skills (Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2014). Working for Baptist Hospital has provided me the opportunity to shadow technologists and study some of their daily duties. The patient is typically shielded with a lead vest during the procedure. A radiologist also works closely with the radiologic technologist as additional support.They work together to decide if additional images are required to accurately diagnose the patient. The technologist must also track and keep detailed patient records (Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2014). According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment for radiologic technologists is projected to grow twenty-one percent from 2012 to 2022 (Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2014). This is considered faster than the average for all other occupations. Ragiologic technologist will always be in demand because they are the one's who conduct the diagnostic procedures. As people age they become more fragile so things are expected to break, with age we also see an increase in other medical conditions such as osteoporosis. With health insurance now being mandatory for all citizens, we can only expect an increase in patient's seeking medical care.
