The Father of Desiree’s Baby Racism Racism was very evident in this story and also in the time period before the American Civil War. Racism is poor treatment or violence against another race. It can also be another race believing that they are better than the other race. This short story is all about racism during the slavery times. The story was written on November 24, 1892. This story takes place in southern Louisiana before the American Civil War. The Armand’s family was obviously caused by racial outlooks and social influences. The short story was written based on a time when racial prejudice and discrimination was familiar mainly thorough out America’s southern states. The views of people’s personal legacy by the community help aid a social status permitting people to be successful in business and personal activities, in 1850’s it was very usual behavior for racial discrimination in the south. The sight of white advantages over the African American slaves was what was mandatory to maintain that civilization’s control. The United States Civil War was a war of much destruction. It destroyed a whole society. Living during those difficult times when society felt the only way to maintain their way of life was to create societal moral beliefs. It was based solely on the idea of one race being greater to another race . This story embodies how the author saw her experiences that she had lived through. This story tells the terrors of slavery before the American Civil War. This story represents the importance of how serious discrimination and slavery was in southern Louisiana. He did not want his well looked upon family name to be ruined. He was portrayed as a man who had it all. He had a reputation to keep maintained and Armand being part black would have ruined it. He owned a plantation and was a slave master. Racism did play a major role because when Armand found out that the baby was mixed everything changed such as Armand’s mood and Desiree’s happiness. She seemed to be very jolly and happy. Armand was also content. He was pleasant to the slaves. After he saw his child growing to be mixed it changed his whole attitude. He did not love the child genuinely because love is unconditional. He was more concerned about the race of the child. This was a great short story to read and it gave me insight on the importance and seriousness of our society back then. I am glad we have overcome these terrible racial matters.

Demonstrates of how the Thirteenth Amendment was intended to free slaves and describes the abolitionist’s efforts. The freedom of African Americans was less a humanitarian act than an economic one. There was a battle between the North and South freed slaves from bondage but at a certain cost. While a few good men prophesied the African Americans were created equal by God’s hands, the movement to free African Americans gained momentum spirited by economic and technological innovations such as the export, import, railroad, finance, and the North’s desire for more caucasian immigrants to join America’s workforce to improve our evolving nation. Throughout the span of recorded history, from the beginning to the present day, there has racism. One of the biggest understandings of this is through slavery and prejudice. Many races have been designated as inferior and thus have been shown hate, aggression and disdain. Even though racism became a commonplace in society, there were many people who fought against it either through action or through their words. Authors, Mark Twain, and Harper Lee used their words to address the racism that plagues the United States in their respective books, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and To Kill a Mockingbird. Another part that was analyzed was how Armand actually treated his slaves from making them forget how to be happy to him severely punishing them at the expense of his biracial child. Also in the context that his child was part African served as a catalyst for his change of heart from love to hate towards his wife which then terminated to his banishment of his wife and son. In the end of it all, the reader has seen the adverse and destructive effects that racism can have upon a select group of people and on society. From what Armand despised the most, was actually a part of him that he could never get rid of.
Throughout our country’s history, race has been an ongoing issue. This problem was especially serious during the 1930’s. Evidence for this could be found in John Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men. In the book, the character Crooks is very mistreated at the ranch due to his race. Crooks is very lonely and bitter due to his exclusion of having to sleep in the barn by himself, the social structure of the ranch, and the ranchers outright mistreating him.
Discrimination and prejudice were very common acts in the early and middle 1900's. Prejudice in this book is displayed by the acts of hate and misunderstanding because of someone's color. People of color were the majority that were treated unfairly. During this time in the southern states, black people had to use separate bathrooms, drinking fountains, sections in restaurants, churches, and even go to separate schools. Although much of the discrimination was directed towards blacks, there were plenty of accounts towards impoverished families by those that had money. Discrimination is prevalent when people that are different are called names. Some people thought blacks were automatically dumb because of their color. They weren't allowed to do anything but menial tasks (such as chopping wood) and hard labor because they were thought too dumb.
Although Armand truly loved Desiree, his love wasn’t stronger than protecting his family’s status. He knew from the beginning that it was he who was not white. Hoping that his child would not come out black, he still took precautions by marrying a woman with an unknown origin to put the blame on. He hated himself for what he truly was and he was not going to let anyone know his secret and have that kind of power over him. It was never Desiree’s fault and she ended up suffering when it was really Armand’s doing.

In that time period there was a significant amount of racism, segregation, and prejudice occurring. However, racism was on a whole different level in the South than it was in the North of the United States. In the North, colored people had rights like freedom of speech, but in the South they had no rights. In the book To Kill A Mockingbird, the author, Harper Lee, did a wonderful job of vividly portraying how Negro’s lived in the South, particularly in the state of Mississippi in Maycomb County.
Kate Chopin utilizes irony in “Desiree’s Baby” to warn people of the dangers of racism and how it can victimize not only the hated race, but also the one who is racist. “Desiree’s Baby” is a tale about a young slave owner, Armand, with a well-respected name in Louisiana. He marries an adopted woman named Desiree and once they have their child, he notices that the baby has black features. He assumes that since he does not know his wife’s racial background that his wife must have some sort of black heritage, but it is his “inferences [that] lead to tragedy." Armand did not want his wife to be around because of her assumed race, so she took the baby and left. Months later when Armand is burning Desiree and the baby’s possessions, he finds a letter written by his mother stating, “But, above all…night and day, I thank the good God for having so arranged our lives that our dear Armand will never know that his mother, who adores him, belongs to the race that is cursed with the brand of slavery.” Chopin’s irony was embedded in the fact that Armand hated who he is without knowing it. He assumed that his wife was the one with the black genes and that she needed to leave. Armand lost everything he had and loved because of the hate he held in his heart. The author proved through her use of irony that Caucasian and black people are the same. Besides physical features, it is impossible to tell from which race one has descended.

She is targeted by Armand with verbal abuse after he learns of the baby’s racial background, but that is only because he suspects her of being of a mixed racial background. He later finds out that his mother “belongs to the race that is cursed with the brand of slavery” (174), proving his accusations false. On the other hand, Desiree does claim to Armand that she is white, though this is not exactly confirmed when her mother responds to her inquiry about her ancestry, telling Desiree to return to her with her child. Despite this, it can be said that Armand was wrong to accuse Desiree since he was partially, if not completely, the reason behind the baby’s race.
