The world became a really small place, where no more boundaries left anymore. The 21st century is the age of equality and tolerance and it erased an inadmissible laws of the 20st century. The plan of abolition of discrimination, segregation and division of people succeeded and today, everybody is equal regardless of their race, gender or religion. Despite all, some people are still having a hard time to perceive this idea. The history of racism in the United States of America comes from the seventeenth century, specifically since the European colonization of America. For many decades, people with non-white skin color faced injustice and discrimination in America. But, today America became a home for everyone from any gender, race and faith. …show more content…

Majority of people discriminated blacks from whites. Black people were perceived as second class humans and that for the main factor of racism. From a legal standpoint direct racism has officially ended after the Civil Rights Act of 1963. Civil Rights Act of 1963 theoretically disabled any sorts of discrimination towards colored people, but it took decades for people to get use to this new act or in other other words to this new chapter in their lives. In the 21st century racism still does exist. Most people would think that the members of the past generation are the ones that create racism due to their different mind set. But, this ideology is totally false, because racism is still exists among the millennials. I would agree with the idea that millennials are less prejudiced, but it is still makes racism to exist. Nowadays, racism in universities occurs more than anywhere else. Because, universities offer place for every individual from all over the world. There is very few black faculty in the university. Only 1 black professor has more that 10 year tenure in the university. Currently, less than 10 black professors are teaching at Fairfield University. The major reason of having a few black professors is racism. Majority of black professors left the university due to racism they faced here. Administration is weakly responding to racism issues and that what keeps racism alive in this campus. The great example would be the Ghetto Party. Three days after the Ghetto party made into the news headlines of many well known national and international news outlets, university administration decided to have a forum where students of different backgrounds will have a right to express their thoughts and suggestions about this event. President of the university took part in this forum as well. But, he did not share his thoughts with the students. First of all this forum was premature, because emotions were still fresh. Administration should of waited for at least one week for students to calm down. Second and most important, the President needed to speak up and participate in this forum. But, he preferred to stay quiet and to listen. As Dr. Garvey mentioned during her interview that forum was a good idea, but it needed more pressure from above. She believes that communication, councillors, and community as a whole can fix the
