Aynor is a small community with close ties, many people who live here have known each other since birth, and families know families. The community itself is great, as well as the school system, but only if you have the right ties, a well-known name, or at least wealthy family. Otherwise, it’s not the best. School administrators, as well as teachers, have been known to pick favorites, and always the same people. Because of these things, children are shown that they are in fact superior due to their relations, thus negatively impacting issues further down the road. Just recently a student in the local middle school committed suicide, he had been bullied for a while and felt this was the only way. There have been a number of times where rules are broken by a well-known student in the school and the incident seems to be simply overlooked. I have tried in the past to bring this favoritism in the classrooms to the attention of principals and staff, but that seems to only be a temporary fix and only in one place. While this seems to be a very real problem in many schools and many places, there seems little can be done on a large scale to end the problem. Individuals can learn to just do their best to peacefully resolve any conflicts there may be between themselves and others, to just comply with the rules and try not to stand out too much. Any type of difference is acknowledged in terrible ways, it forces children to comply with other’s standards of normality, standards of ideal. Who can you be if you are punished for being yourself? This is what we allow in our school systems, despite having meeting constantly and telling the students that they are safe here, and if anyone hurts you then you can come to us, we’ll solve it. But a soft slap on the wrist, a forced meaningless apology, and to be on your way means
