Racism is everywhere, so why wouldn’t it be present in the world of soccer? When a black man in Paris wanted to get on a train, he was stopped. He wasn’t let through because of racist fans. They chanted horrible things and refused to let the man board (Tran). Racism in soccer is rapidly increasing and UEFA needs to enforce a more strict no – tolerance policy on this issue.
Racism in sports isn’t surprising, but the racism in soccer is on another level. Not only do the fans get nasty, but other players can be the problem too. Racism in soccer can not only affect the players but also the mood of the game. Racism has been the cause of many matches that have had to be abandoned. Players getting abuse on the pitch from another player can make them feel targeted against. This was the case between Borussia Dortmund goalkeeper, Roman Weidenfeller, and Gerald Asamoah of Schalke. During the match, Weidenfelller clashed with Asamoah and called him a “black pig” (sbs). The goalkeeper was fined 10,000 euros (17,000 usd) and banned for three games (sbs). Although he apologized for the incident, that does not excuse his racism on the pitch. Captains of clubs can use racist slurs too. John Terry, captain of Chelsea football club, racially abused Anton Ferdinand of Queens Park Rangers. Allegedly, Terry had called Ferdinand a black c**t. The Chelsea defender admitted to using the word “black” and swearing at Ferdinand but insisted he had only been repeating words he thought the player was accusing him of saying (bbc). Whether or not Terry actually said those words is never really clear. Terry appealed the Football Association verdict, which did nothing in the end.
