Racism has been around since the dawn of human existence, coming in many forms and effecting all types of people. In the twenty-first century, racism still plays a part in ever society on the plant. But instead of overt racism people find different ways to disadvantage certain groups. The current American culture views overt racism as unfair, rude, and wrong, but that does not stop people from using unconscious racism. Unconscious racism is when the offender disadvantages another based on race without being out right racist to the person. From not giving a job to a person based on the color of their skin to calling out the president for not being born in the country, racism effects people at all status levels. Starting when the first settlers arrived to internment camps to modern day unconscious racism, racism has token many forms and changes according to the time. The key factors that help unconscious racism thrive in our society are the changes to the policy that determine what is a racist act, the formations of stereotype through the concentration of ethnic groups population, and the negative effects of Affirmative action all played a part. For many years blacks and other minority groups have been suffering sentencing disparity in courts throughout the country. One such case in 1960 involved two individuals that had identical charges, but one man got a stricter punishment, he happen to be black. The attorney pointed this out and the judge changed the sentence. This is a clear example of unconscious racism, showing that in this time period it was ok to change the sentence without having clear intent. Beside the change in time period many factors contributed to the can in culture. The eradication of unconscious racism will be a long process involving huge change in the way people in our country see themselves and others of different racial groups. One important step would be the removal of all race based decision and the removal of Affirmative action all together. The unfair privilege that minorities get through affirmative action cases racial tensions in the community. Racial tension is the key factor towards racism, the only why for our society to deal with this tension are to get rid of the source of the problem. But to do this is a huge problem based on the way this country has dealt with the problem previously, and the already huge amount of racial tension globally.
