Race being used as a part of the admission process is a very controversial topic in the United States. It can be argued that race should or should not be a factor in college admissions. There are many reasons why race should or should not be a part of the application process. It’s partly a moral question in which each side have a good point. A policy made to help a disadvantaged group or race is called Affirmative action. Affirmative action is used by many colleges to help some races and ethnic groups over others. For example, just being African American in most colleges can give you a boost to get scholarships, get accepted in the school, and many advantages. Throughout American history African Americans have been discriminated against, but now the colleges are using the affirmative action policy to cancel out discrimination by making rules to benefit them. Two main reasons for having race be a factor in college admissions are to help the African Americans that don’t have the same benefits that other races would and it would somehow make up for the past discrimination against African Americans. Slavery and the downgrading of minorities in the past brought notice to the fact that many African Americans are at big disadvantage compared to White Americans. “The most frequently identified objective for affirmative action is to remedy past discrimination…Efforts must be made to erase the effects of past discrimination, and this necessarily involves affirmative action” (Chemerinsky 3). The heavy racism that was going on in American in the past has caused many to try to make up for it. Many people have fallen behind in the race because of what happened in the past.
