In today’s “equal” society, some aspects of life are not so equal afterall. Race assumes social importance through numerous ways including chance, choice, and context. When someone is born into a race, that is their chance of being that ethnicity. They do not have to exert any efforts in order to be born a certain race and it is completely out of their hands. Choice of how you act is also affected by race. People of color may feel obligated to do certain things based on the stereotypes and prejudices that are against their race. The conflict perspective states that there is always a definite loser and winner of any situation. In the episode, there were numerous occasions that indicated that there was a winner and a loser. Most of the time, Michael may have seemed like the loser, but in reality, he was still the winner. This is true because of how big of a social construct race has become. Even after his actions required someone to come to his office to try to fix the problems that he created, he was never officially reprimanded for it. Perhaps if someone else of a different race did something to get Mr. Brown to come they would have been reprimanded for it, simply because they would have a “lower value” because they weren’t white. The most punishment Michael received was when Kelly slapped him for talking down to her and degrading her based on the stereotypes of her race. Even after Mr. Brown got to the office, Michael’s behavior still did not improve. When Mr. Brown introduced himself, Michael began to laugh and did not believe that his last name was Brown and began to question him. Although he was being disrespectful, no one corrected him for being rude. This all makes sense when you see that he is the boss and the simple fact that he is a white male. The way Michael conducted himself and made others act throughout the episode was demeaning to anyone who is different race other than white. Michael’s exercise also was very inappropriate and offensive to the categories being represented. After Kelly slapped him, he stated that now everyone knows what it’s like to be a minority, but in all reality, they still have no idea. The fact that anyone could possibly think that a simple simulation could reveal what it was truly like to be viewed less than someone solely based on your race is ridiculous and offensive. Michael has no idea what it is like to be an actual loser
