Rabindranath Tagore was born into a wealthy Brahmin family in Calcutta. He returned to India after a short stay in England studying law.He pursued a career as a writer,poet,educator,playwright,philosopher and a songwriter instead. Rabindranath Tagore (1861-1941) was the youngest son of Debendranath Tagore.
Rabindranath Tagore was a Bengali poet, artist, novelist. composer, playwright and a philosopher. He is India’s first Nobel laureate. Tagore modernised Bengali art by rejecting rigid classical forms. He spoke about political topics and even personal ones i his short stories, novels, essays etc. He published his first substantial poetry when he was sixteen years old under the pseudonym Bhanushingho which means Sun Lion. The Swedish Academy apprised the idealistic nature and for it's accessible nature for the Western readers. Tagore won the 1913 Nobel Prize for Literature. He grew up around an environment where there was much writing and artistic activity. Tagore wrote quite brilliantly his entire life and produced more than 3,000 songs, volumes of novels, poems,short stories and plays. Later in his life he painted and delivered lectures at educational institutions. He is the composer of both the national anthems of India and Bangladesh. Tagore’s thought on political issues was complex. He supported Indian nationalists and was against Imperialism.Tagore’s international travels also sharpened his opinion that human divisions were shallow.
