Chapter ten “The Restless North” explores the significant events that helped shape American from 1815 – 1860. We see the expansion of the north, the transportation and industrial revolution, changes in education, religious expansion and a further and clear divide on the issue of slavery. Just as the South was growing the North was transitioning as well. The first event of importance discussed in chapter ten was the transportation revolution. As the country was growing and expanding westward the American’s were faced with the dilemma of how to best transport goods far from where they were produced for as little money as possible. The introduction of innovative ways to move goods and people were being introduced into the United States such as roads, the Erie Canal, and railroads were readily adopted as a way to address the issue. He is accredited for leading the “common school” reform effort to institutionalize the education of children. I feel this is important because it leveled the playing field ensuring all children were educated in a consistent manner. It also provided for additional training for teachers. We can directly attribute the modern public education system to his efforts. In conclusion, chapter ten demonstrated how the engrained the idea of commercialism became to the North. Essentially, the North grew leaps and bounds past the South in expansion, development and population. In addition various reform efforts improved conditions for children, the mentally ill, and even women and African Americans.
