Recommended: Impact of terrorism
In the first place, the quilt square that I wanted to embody was one that represented the Boston Marathon terror attack, April 15th, 2013. In light of the fact that Boston is so close to my home, this terror act felt personal and resonated profoundly with a vast amount of people in New Hampshire who had family that either ran or knew people that ran in the marathon. Furthermore, the center of my quilt depicts the image of runners, representing the American flag and the caption above is so symbolic of the motto that came out after this horrific event and that is “Boston Strong”. To be sure, Boston wanted the world to know that they would remain strong and continue this tradition that has gone on since 1897. As an illustration, I made sure
... in a common effort that contributed to protest activities. The photograph also uses tension to portray the two conflicting ideologies. There is visible tension between the guardsmen and the protestors; the guns represent war and violence while the flowers represent peace, love and nature. The National Guardsmen also look very uneasy while the protestors look content and comfortable. The union of the two creates tension in this photograph because they are so meaningful alone, making this photograph a very iconic image of the time.
The poster I have chosen contains a young woman holding a gun with a red bandage covering her eyes and mouth and behind her, on the wall is an American Flag painted on with dripping textures. On the American Flag there is a quote which reads, "We kill people who kill people because killing
“In memory of the men and women who served in the Vietnam War and later died as a result of their service. We honor and remember their sacrifice”(“Vietnam War in Memory”). This simple inscription stands at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in recognition of the names who are not able to join the walls with their fellow soldiers. The memorial as a whole contains the names of deceased Vietnam veterans, and stands tall for people to view and remember their friends and relatives who fought diligently in the war. However, Maya Lou’s Vietnam Veterans Memorial is a very controversial piece of art because of the public image towards the war, the making of the memorial and the powerful message represented in the work.
Susan Agrawal writes in her article talking about the terrible tragedy of the bombing that happen in Boston. She doesn’t necessarily talk about how it all went down she speaks more about this one in particular man that lost some of his limbs and went to therapy and found his soul mate in there. The writers, Konika Banerjee and Paul Bloom, quotes of what James Costello said, he was not involved in the bombing in Boston, but that he was supporting a friend of his, and he quotes “’I now realize why I was involved in the tragedy…It was to meet my best friend, and the love of my life.’” One could ask him or herself if James would have found his wife if he was never part of that attack. One never knows if he would have been married to her if Costello
I found many of these quilts to carry the thought of love with them. They all represent people who are missed. One of the quilts that I observed had many meanings to it. It had pictures that meant believing in Jesus. They had a picture of a broken heart.
The United States of America is known around the world as a country that, over 200 years ago, fought diligently to afford freedom formal who so elect to reside within her bounds. The freedom of the United States of America is symbolized by the American flag. What once started out as a left over piece of cloth, is now a treasure for American citizens, and individuals that long for the freedom that the flag maintains. The poem the “Star- Spangled Banner” is a prime example of how the American flag portrays freedom and hope for Americans, both in the past and present. The passion that forged this nation remains today, due to the influence of the “Star- Spangled Banner.” Popularly known as the “National Anthem,” Francis Scott Key’s “Star- Spangled Banner” uses form, sound and symbolism to tell the story of high hopes in America.
The Boston Marathon bombings happened on April 15, 2013 when two bombs exploded at 2:49 pm near the finish line of the Boston Marathon. The bombers were brothers, Tamerlan & Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, who moved to the United States after the father applied for political asylum. The younger Tsarnaev brother said the attacked the Boston Marathon in retaliation for U.S. wars in Muslim countries. The Boston Marathon Bombing Trial is important to American society because it changed the way we looked at acts of terrorism legally, showed that people must effectively pay for their actions, and that we must never let our guard down.
The events used by Ralph Ellison in his story Battle Royal are symbols that contribute to the theme of inequality that is portrayed throughout the entire story. Three symbols or events in this story are the battle, the blindfolding of the fighters, and the naked woman with an American Flag tattooed upon her.
The feeling of abandonment and the search for approval go hand in hand; "The Century Quilt" is a touching poem communicates those feelings with its readers. This poem emphasizes familial connection and favoritism among family members. In "The Century Quilt", the speaker communicates a theme that finding approval from close family members can often feel difficult; the speaker uses symbolism to represent the sense of comfort she finds in her family, while also using imagery to help the readers visualize the dreams she has for her future.
off and being celebrated by their families as they fight for freedom. However, it also depicts the
The Boston Marathon is a tradition held annually on Patriots’ Day and it attracts hundreds of thousands of people to the 26 mile run from Hopkins, Massachusetts to Boston’s Back Bay Neighborhood. On April 15, 2013, the race was set to mark the 117th anniversary of the marathon. All was well until five hours into the race, Boston became the target of a terrorist attack when two bombs detonated 12 seconds apart from each other. The two bombs which had been placed inside backpacks containing pressure cookers that were filled with pellets and nails, were placed near the finish line where the crowd was watching the race (Boston Marathon bombing of 2013, 2014). The first bomb detonated on the north side of Boylston Street which was less than half a block from the finish line. The second bomb went off 12 seconds later about 600 feet from the first bomb.
I read the poem, and had to read it again and again. As with most poems, the meaning is always clouded from me and I need a little help to figure out the true meaning of the author's intentions. In this case, the outcome was not any different. The poem did not make much sense to me. Instead, I created my own meaning and it differed greatly from the others. However, I still like my interpretation and enjoy the final product that was created when I combined my ideas with the groups. I would like to start, by printing the poem.
...e has lost. Set in the gymnasium of IKM-Manning High School, this funeral accurately portrays the devastation felt when a loved one has perished in war and is returned in a casket. This photo focuses on the home coming of a soldier, but unlike “V-J Day in Times Square”, it’s shown in a negative way. The vivid colors of the U.S. flag’s stripes as well as the blue from the VFW flag are bold against the seemingly monochrome photo. Red, white, and blue are distinct in this photo, representing the Americanism and freedom that this soldier has brought. The balance of colors is split: bold colors of freedom on one side, and black of the garments of mourners on the other. Although there is freedom, there was a price to be paid; a life. People all over the country lose family and friends to the perils of war. Unfortunately for this soldier, he came home resting in peace.
I included the quilt as my own nod to how much of a family-oriented person I am. In old books quilts are made for families. There are made by young girls for their hope chests and by mothers for sharing. I love my family to pieces and would do almost anything for them so a quilt seems like the perfect symbol of that for me. Also the quilt that I drew is almost identical to the only quilt I have ever made by myself, which I had included orange and green as my favorite colors but also the green for my love of nature and orange for leaves in the fall, which is my favorite
There are high and low classes when it comes to art, quilts pushed through the low class now some are considered a high class art. Soon after quilts were being accepted into museum’s collections such as the Smithsonian. The AIDS memorial quilt was a quilt that was collected into a collection. Majority of memorials collected are permanent in the collection. “Today the quilt is a powerful visual reminder of the AIDS pandemic, more than 48,000 individual 3-by-6-foot memorial panels- most commemorating the life of someone who has died of AIDS, have been sewn together by friends, lovers and family members.” (Lateef,
