Queen Liliuokalani wrote a letter, titled, “Queen Liliuokalani’s Letter of Protest to Mckinley” she writes that she believes that the treaty that the United States is trying to carry out to take over Hawaii is an injustice, since it goes against many of Hawaii’s civil rights. The letter was written, while The United States was in the Spanish-American War. The United States was attempting to take over Hawaii, just to look stronger to the Spanish. In her letter, Queen Liliuokalani discusses the treaty that the president of America is trying to carry out. America threatens to blow up Hawaii, if the Queen does not give up her power to America. John Adams, a United States diplomat and soon to become the second president, is now traveling with his son. In 1780, during the course of their voyage, Adams wife, Abigail, writes a letter to their son to encourage him to gain the most he can from traveling with his father. Throughout the course of Abigail Adams letter, she uses rhetorical strategies to emphasize why she is proud of her son and how he will become wiser from his adventures.
In a letter Abigail Adams rights to her son, John Quincy Adams, who is traveling abroad with his father, John Adams, she advises her son to take advantage of the opportunities he has to utilize his own knowledge and talents to improve his sophistication and obtain growth in expanding im his character. Abigail Adams carried a maternal tone to encourage her son along his journey throughout the letter. Adams supports her position by giving examples with pathos, analogies and allusions.
Stevens held firm beliefs about the future of Hawaii in the hands of the United States. From the start of his stay in Hawaii, Stevens made it clear whose side he was on in the political war. He would openly criticize Hawaii’s monarchy, and at times would refer to Queen Liliuokalani and her advisors as “incompetent”(2). Stevens may have not held anything against the Queen herself or any of her cabinet members, but rather degraded them simply to achieve his goals of the annexation of Hawaii, something that he considered “the only effective remedy for Hawaii’s troubles.” (2) Queen Liliuokalani naturally spoke out against the degradation of herself and her cabinet, and on behalf of her position of defending the Hawaiian Monarchy. “The U.S. Minister John Stevens was influenced by the annexationists. As a diplomat, his role was to foster a friendly, trusting relationship with the Hawaiian government. Instead, he often criticized the monarchy in public. I complained to the U.S. government about Stevens’ attitude and conduct but no action was taken.” (1)
In the cold mitts of January, 1780, 4 years after the Declaration of Independence was written, Mrs. Abigail Adams has wrote a letter to her son, John Quincy Adams. Mrs. Adams letter explains that during his trip he should try to gain knowledge and wisdom. She uses imagery, metaphors, and historical allusions to advise John Quincy Adams while he is abroad with his father. This letter shows how she is caring about her son and wants safety for him during the trip as well. She is also very strict with her motherly side in this letter.
He brought the idea to the congress and many of the congressmen disagreed with the idea of annexing the Hawaiian Islands. After several weeks of discussing and disagreement they fell through and decided to annex the Hawaiian Islands. In July 1898 the United States signed a joint congressional decision to annex the Hawaiian Islands (Mckenny). Now connected to the Hawaiian Islands McKinley started an effort to build the Panama Canal (DeGregorio). Also in 1899 the United States signed a treaty with Germany and the United Kingdom. With the treaty we gained what is now part of the American Samoa (Mckenny).

In the letter that John Adams writes to Mercy Warren, his purpose is to open up Mercy’s eyes to how government should function, not one based on what religion wants but one that is in the interest of the public’s needs. Many different groups today are seeking the sovereignty of Hawaii. The reason being that these mostly Native Hawaiian groups feel that they suffered a severe injustice when they were annexed into the United States against their own free will. They feel that since they were treated like objects rather than human beings with rights and emotions, they now deserve reparations. The intentions of the different groups vary. Some only want reparations in the form of money and acknowledgements of the inhuman acts that were committed against them and others want it in the form of independence for the island. However, restoring sovereignty to Hawaii would cause great injustices toward the non-natives living on the island today. So these groups should not be granted the sovereignty they are seeking.
During the whole course of the letter, Columbus beat around the bush and was not upfront with their true intentions of the voyage. He speaks of gold, he speaks of quarreling, but whenever these subjects came up, Columbus quickly changes the subject to a lighter matter. Based on much of the fine print, much of the things that he did not realize what he was writing, and by reading in between the lines of this letter, I saw much more than what was just written. The strayed away from the fact that he was tyrannically taking over the indigenous peoples of this land, even though it was so apparent that he in fact was. Because of this information that we now know about Columbus’s tyrannical ways, was hard for me to read this letter and still believe in Columbus’s integrity as an eyewitness for describing the events on at this New World.
Dear Samson this is Royce, in good faith, who apologizes for such a sinful delay from your last letter. That letter bestowed a whole hearted warmth upon me, a warmth I cannot say the voyage to the New World has brought. Recalling the influence of religious freedom which had urged me to strive towards this New World has pursued a bittersweet arrival. My brethren and I have prayed for different, blessed lands, yet, Cape Cod stared wildly and callously upon my optimism. Before our arrival, half of our ship’s men were plagued by scurvy and disease. Whether one death on the ship is fortunate or unfortunate (Of Plymouth Plantation, Page 7), a poor man was starved, killed and thrown over the Mayflower’s sides (Of Plymouth Plantation, page 5). Nevertheless, the Mayflower continued miles across the stormy seas (Of Plymouth Plantation, Page 8) I prayed for relief and the holiness of our arrival could not be expressed with prayer. Father would probably laugh at my pessimism. I know at times I seem like a pessimist but, deny me not that the voyage was horrible. Sugar production was Hawaii’s largest buissiness. Tons of sugar was grown in Hawaii. Many of the Hawaiians worked on the sugar farms. Sugar was sold to the United States and large amounts of money flowed into Hawaii. Hawaii’s economy grew and banks were built. Annexation America’s main goal was to overthrow monarchy and Annex Hawaii as the 50th state. In 1887, the Americans forced king Kalakaua to sign a new constitutions that lessened the king’s powers and limited the rights of native Hawaiians to hold office. After Kalakaua’s death, Queen Liliuokalani ruled Hawaii. She was stubborn and wanted Hawaiian independence. But the Americans took over the government and ended monarchy and set up their own government. They put up the American flag where the Hawaiian flag originally flew. So, in other words, Hawaii was stolen from its original owners. Defenseless, Hawaii couldn’t do anything about United States’ control. Hawaii was then Annexed to the United states in 1898.

One day Queen Liliuokalani made the United States focus its attention in Hawaiian territory. Queen Liliuokalani announced a “new constitution” under which only Hawaiian citizens had the right to vote. Queen Liliuokalani was trying to gain back the native Hawaiian political power. This decision made the American minister to Hawaii, John L. Stevens, worried due to all the investments Americans had made on Hawaii. John Colburn, the interior minister of Hawaii, rushed down to alert his friend Lorrin Thurston, a firebrand lawyer and antiroyalist plotter. John Stevens and Lorrin Thurston were linked with one thing in mind, overthrow the Queen Liliuokalani. Throughout the time of American Imperialism, I believe that we, as Americans, were not justified in more than half of the decisions we made based solely on, “America felt as if they were missing out and ultimately decided to participate in imperialism,” however, the one settlement we were justified in doing was the purchase of Alaska by President Johnson’s Secretary of State William Seward. This purchase was justifiable due to Alaska being, “…one of the greatest purchases of all time for Alaska was rich in minerals, timber and oil.” (From Lecture) Although Seward did receive some backlash for his investment, because of this purchase, the United States added 586,412 sq. miles of new territory and there were no wars that broke out over this decision. The least justified action we partook in was the planned overthrow of Queen Liliuokalani and the annexation of Hawaii as our 50th state. Queen Liliuokalani was “loyal to her past” and simply wanted to “redeem her country from outsiders” by protecting her land, such as countless other have done from Americans in the past, which only resulted in Americans feeling “threatened.” Americans had no right to plan a revolution against the queen on the basis of their political privileges becoming vulnerable. Due to this, the U.S felt it was necessary to overthrow her and allowed John L. Stevens to order marines to be ready to attack, in which she quickly surrendered, and promptly gave the “presidency” to Sanford Dole.
According to the PBS show “Hawaii's Last Queen” the Republic Hawaii's president Sanford Dole annexed the kingdom of Hawaii to the U.S on August 12, 1898. An organization supporting annexation called the Hawaiian League led by Lorrin Thurston which took many other forms forced King Kalakaua to sign the bayonet constitution. This constitution striped the power of the monarchy and when his death came his sister Lili'uokalani ascended to the throne and her hopes were to restore power to the Hawaiians which the constitution took away. The missionary boys did not like the queens ideals so they planned to overthrow the monarchy for good which they did later on in history. The annexation was an unjust act done by a group of bisness men wanting power and Hawaii as a territory of the U.S. Although some might argue that annexation was good because it allowed trade to the U.S tariff free others oppose that it was biased because it stripped Hawaiian of their rights to vote and destroyed the Hawaiian monarchy.
