The Quality and Safety Education for Nurses (QSEN) competencies relevant to HIV an injectable drug use includes safety, evidence-based practice, teamwork and collaboration and patient-centered care. Patient centered care is when the nurse recognizes the patient as a partner in providing care based on respect for their preferences, values, and needs. The nurse implements patient-centered care when providing care the community by basing the care off of what the patients state is needed, such as providing financial resources for those in the community who are unable to grasp resources. Evidence-based practice is defined as integrating best current evidence with clinical expertise as well as preferences and values of the patient for delivery of optimal health care. Evidence based research to help prevent further HIV infections from injectable drug use can be found previously stated with the use of syringe service programs. Initiating ART immediately rather than waiting for CD4 results is a direct result of evidence-based research for better practice to help prevent the progression of HIV to AIDS. Safety is to minimize the risk of harm to both patient and provider through individual performance and organization efficiency (QSEN Institute, 2017, p. 1). Safety is extremely important throughout all aspects of healthcare, but when it comes to the community it’s even more important to be sure that the safety of not only the nurse and the patient is taken into consideration but also the rest of the community. The nurse advocates for the safety of the community by educating about syringe service programs and correct use and disposal of needles to prevent the spread of HIV through injection drug
