The Puritans were one of the first to settle and build established communities in the New World. Separatists from the Church of England, they sought religious freedom. Unlike other Separatists, however, they sought to live by more rigid standards. The Puritans maintained a “lawful obedience” to the church and to the community. Children and servants were given an education and stable governments formed to protect the community. Those outside the Puritan community, however, were not always met with the same environment. The Puritans attacked Indians and did not allow for religious freedom, in an effort to uphold their faith and cut down blasphemers.
