I am not new to Purdue Owl, I refer to it several times whenever I am doing a research paper or writing an essay and have always found it to be very useful. I have never used the site map on the Purdue Owl website before, the site map showed me topics I never knew was available on Purdue Owl. Usually, I use the website to double check a source citation and in-text citation. The website was very easy to navigate, it is well organized into general section and then into a more detailed sub-section. I will be using its “outline components” to help me create my outline for my paper. I always refer to the APA citation section on the Purdue Owl website and I will be using it again to help with my research paper.
Sven Birkerts essay, “The Owl Has Flown” taken from The Gutenberg Elegies: The Fate of Reading in an Electronic Age 1994 focuses on the immature thoughts of using electronics with our reading. He refers to the past on multiple occasions, giving the reader the sense that Birkerts may think that the past was a much better way of reading. When Birkerts talks about reading he also means learning and interpreting, getting the understanding from what we read. The depth of reading has changed a lot since the middle ages and Birkerts believes that it has changed and will continue to change for the worse. A quote from my reading of this essay that really tore at me is, “As we now find ourselves at a cultural watershed—as the fundamental process of transmitting information is shifting from mechanical to circuit-driven, from page to screen—it may be time to ask how modifications in our way of reading may impinge upon our mental life. For how we receive information bears vitally on the ways we experience and interpret reality.” the reason for this becoming an obstacle for me is that I agree and disagree with him.
APA (American Psychological Association) style is primarily used in the social science disciplines. It is formatted like MLA, and shows many similarities, but is unique in several key points.
Analyzing, a verb meaning to examine critically, so as to bring out the essential elements or give the essence of writing. This great work, Occurrence at Owl Creek by Ambrose Bierce, is about a young adult called Peyton Farquhar. Garnet story takes place during the civil war; therefore Farquhar was a white land owner with slaves. As one digs deeper and cracks the shell of this story, the attention to detail, realism, and capital punishment play a big role.
I came into this class under the impression that I already wrote well enough and wouldn’t need to improve. However, as I progressed through the semester I learned that there is always room to grow. The first paper I produced was not at the level I was hoping but after I actively decided to improve my writing my papers became much better. Looking back on my work in the class I wonder how much my writing has changed and where I still have room to improve. Without evaluating my work I can’t hope to become any better. Through this class I have grown much as a writer but there is still more I can learn.
I now understand how to format a paper and the importance of an outline. English 111 has helped me see the difference in the quality of papers I wrote in high school compared to the quality paper expected in college. When writing my Argumentative Essay I put much more effort into my outline than I did for any other paper in this class. Writing an outline improved my paper in ways I did not take advantage of on earlier assignments. Before this class I never spent time on an outline and considered outlines a waste of time. I now see how helpful an outline can be and plan to use one for papers going forward. The skill area I most improved on from our midterm project has been citations. I have utilized the “Cite It” link from the James Library for MLA style on both of my final papers for this class. The guide provided through the James Library gave many examples which helped me visually see the difference in what was expected. By using this resource I not only improved on MLA format for our class, but also improved upon the APA format for my Sociology
Northwestern University is the 12th best school in the country. It is located in Evanston, Illinois very close to the city of Chicago. There are many requirements to get into Northwestern University. The required ACT score for Northwestern is between a 33 and a 35 composite score. Also for the ACT you have the take the writing portion of the ACT. The University also requires that all applicants have to write an essay. And the GPA requirement is at least a 4.0. There are two main ethical viewpoints that policy analysts view cases through. One is utilitarianism, which believes an action is morally right if it creates the greatest net happiness. It seeks to favor the majority over the minority and focuses on the consequences (“Utilitarian”). The second viewpoint is deontology, which believes an action is morally right if it follows preset rules/laws. It oftens goes hand and hand with religion and doesn’t care about the consequences (Shakil).
My experience at Oak Park Elementary was an experience I will not forget. Oak Park is a school that has a great amount of diversity within their system. While there was a vast measure of diversity there was some similarities within the student body. Majority of the student body is the same race, with a few other that are a different ethnicity. I was in the library for my observation hours and at the beginning of my time I was first disappointed I was not assigned to a class room, but I was very grateful for my opportunity in the library. The American elk, is truly one of the most majestic and beautiful creatures of the Rocky Mountains. With a scientific name of Cervus canadensis, the Elk represent the Rocky Mountains of North America. Elk, used to thrive in natural communities through much of the Northern Hemisphere, from Europe all the way through most of the other continents. (Sensemen 2014) Extensive hunting and accidental destruction of their natural habitats have taken a great portion of their range away from them. Today, populations in North America are mostly found in the Rockies stretching from Canada to New Mexico. Elk happened to be reintroduced into the eastern United States, including Michigan, with three efforts throughout the 1900's. (Sensemen 2014) Elk usually range in color from brown in win¬ter to tan in sum¬mer. The back and sides are lighter color than the rest of their body. In COL 101 I have learned many new things about college. Since this is my first semester at college I did not really know where everything was. This class really helped me to learn new things about myself, including what resources are available to me, what my plan for the future is, and the many changes I have endured during this course.
Are adults overprotective of their children? To what point do we protect children? Where should the line be drawn? Along with those questions is how easily children can be influenced by these same adults. Two poets, Richard Wilbur and Billy Collins, express the ideas of how easily children can be manipulated and how sometimes adults think they are protecting their innocent children, when in reality they are not. Wilbur and Collins express these ideas in their poems through numerous literary devices. The literary devices used by Wilbur and Collins expose different meanings and two extremely different end results. Among the various literary devices used, Wilbur uses imagery, a simple rhyme scheme and meter, juxtaposition of the rational and irrational, and a humorous tone to represent the narrator’s attempt to “domesticate” irrational fears. Conversely Collins uses symbols, historical interpretations, imagery, diction and other literary devices to depict the history teacher’s effort to shield his students from reality. In the poems, “A Barred Owl,” by Richard Wilbur, and “The History Teacher,” by Billy Collins, both poets convey how adults protect and calm children from their biggest, darkest fears and curiosities.
My preferred major is mechanical engineering. Mechanical engineering is the broadest engineering field, involving the design of mechanical systems. These systems are used in a multitude of different fields such as manufacturing, aeronautics, nanotechnology, nuclear power production, heating and cooling. A primary focus is on thermodynamics, structural analysis, materials science, and kinematics.
My RIP companion essay was a complete mess with no structure in the first draft. I believe it was because I had procrastinated to complete both the first drafts for the RIP project and essay. I finished my RIP project then moved on to my companion essay, and the transition was vastly different because in the RIP project I was writing for a different audience than in the companion essay, which was an academic audience. In addition, I forgot that we had been given a prompt with specific instructions and guidelines for the companion essay, which gave the structure for the essay. Much like Benjamin Franklin believed, I feel that a person should take advantage of the time the person has in life with activities a person wants to do or needs to do. A person should not spend much time on activities the person does not want to do. Life is way too short to concern oneself with work or other activities one wants nothing to do with all the time. When possible, I try to forget about my responsibility and just let go of the ‘things’ that do not matter to me. I think a person should try to occupy oneself with something productive, worthwhile, or necessary at all times. Even though a person’s life is left up to a person to live, I cannot imagine thinking that I owe my time to society through working a job that I simply despise. I am a compassionate person, but I do not owe anyone anything regarding my time.
