Why do human beings try to avoid public speaking? Humans are wired with a curiosity to ask questions, and many people ask “Why should I?” because we always find an excuse to not do the task that we need to do. As humans, we want security, like a baby in his or her mother’s arms, we don’t want something new because of we feel that where we are now is enough. One task that people avoid is public speaking. People exudes more fear towards public speak than death itself. This fear comes from doubts in oneself. Questions like “what if?” plague the and in the end, we never tried at all. But people need to overcome the fear of public speaking because it boost confidence, increase knowledge of communication skills, and influence other people. I’ve always been a shy person and I am still shy till this day. I’m not fond of speaking in public because I lack the confidence to do so, I even lack the courage to talk to one person. Most of the time, the audience I mostly communicate with, other than my family and friend, are costumers and classmates. But no matter who the audience is, I can make them think and give opinions or engage them into the topic a chose a side or point of view. Public speaking is also used in the work force to find out if the possible candidate has the right to take on the job. Also in the work force, public speaking can help an employee get a well-deserved promotion. Public speaking is also use not only for job interviews but also let our voice to be heard. For example, Martin Luther King’s speech “I have a dream” created a statement that everyone should respect everyone equally without racial bias. The speech was so powerful that it change how people think of the African-American community and the congress passed a set of laws that revised the civil rights act.
