I intend to make a positive impact in society by studying nursing and becoming a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner. Psychiatric Nurse Practitioners receive advanced training on top of their RN in order to diagnose, treat, and counsel patients. I know that quality medical treatment for mental illness is important through personal experience. I have struggled with clinical depression and an anxiety disorder throughout high school, and for me, medication was a necessity. I am thankful to have had a few skilled professionals that were able to help me. They helped me to find the right medication for me, and worked with me in therapy. However, it is remarkably manageable with treatment. Although medication cannot cure mental illness, it can drastically reduce symptoms. Psych medication is not a cure, and it’s not for everyone who is struggling with mental illness. However, it can be a very powerful tool in recovery. For many people, they don’t need to stay on medication for life- it merely helps them by giving them the clarity of thought and mental stability to work on the rest of their lives and discover coping mechanisms. I think that it is incredible that symptoms of mental illness can be somewhat alleviated through medication. This can, in many situations, be life saving. Due to the rising need for mental health professionals, many people who seek medical treatment wait months to get in to see someone. This is a serious problem because many times, people wait until they can no longer manage their problems to see someone for them. Leaving problems for later only makes them worse, and the faster you address them the easier recovery is. When left untreated, mental illness intensifies and can even lead to suicidal or homicidal behavior. I hope to make a difference in the lives of those suffering from mental illness by showing love and compassion and helping them to reclaim their lives and learn to manage the mental illness holding them
I plan to pursue a career in nursing as a Family Nurse Practitioner. This career take many steps to complete. But it is different routes you can take and different programs you can enroll in for this profession. Family Nurse Practitioners can prescribe medication and diagnose patients and give treatment. They can work either in hospitals and or clinics as a primary healthcare provider. They can also order specific x-rays and test that need to be done for a patient. The nurse practitioners interact with less patients in a clinic than in a hospital. Np’s have privileges to prescribe medications in every state.

This happens simply because mental illness does not care who you are and how much money you do or do not have in the bank. There are so many types of mental illnesses that affect people every day. When some people think of mental illnesses they think of the ones that would cause people to have physical symptoms as well, but that’s untrue, there are many more that you would never know anyone has if you were to see them on the street. As defined by the 2008 encyclopedia “a mental illness is any disease of the mind or brain that seriously affects a person’s ability or behavior. Symptoms of a mental illness may include extreme moods, such as excessive sadness or anxiety, or a decreased ability to think clearly or remember well.” A mentally ill person has severe symptoms that damage the person’s ability to function in everyday activities and situations. Every nation and every economic level can be affected by a mental illness. In the United States alone about 3% of the population has severe mental illness and to add to that number about 40% of people will experience a type of mental illness at least once in their lives. Some cases of mental illnesses can go away on their own, but some cases are so severe that they require professional treatment. There is so much more available to help people recover from their symptoms than in the past.
When people think of a pediatric nurse practitioner, they normally think of a person who performs examinations, takes blood samples, and measures vital signs of children who are sick. What they don’t see are the countless hours spent getting to know the patient, showing sympathy and understanding, and having to explain the diagnosis and treatment plans to the parents and sometimes to the child. Mental disorders are rapidly becoming more common with each new generation born in the world. Currently, nearly one in two people suffer from some form of depression, anxiety, or other mental health problem at some point in their lives (Editor). With so many people suffering from their mental illnesses, steps have been taken in order to get help needed for these people but progress has been slow. In the medical world, hospitals are treating those with physical problems with more care than those with mental problems. Prescription drugs can only do so much helping the mentally ill go through their daily lives and more should be done to help those who need more than medicine to cope with their illness. Mental health should be considered just as important as physical health because of how advanced physical healing is, how the public reacts to those with mental illness, and due to the consequences that could happen if the illness is not correctly helped.
