I intend to make a positive impact in society by studying nursing and becoming a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner. Psychiatric Nurse Practitioners receive advanced training on top of their RN in order to diagnose, treat, and counsel patients. I know that quality medical treatment for mental illness is important through personal experience. I have struggled with clinical depression and an anxiety disorder throughout high school, and for me, medication was a necessity. I am thankful to have had a few skilled professionals that were able to help me. They helped me to find the right medication for me, and worked with me in therapy. However, it is remarkably manageable with treatment. Although medication cannot cure mental illness, it can drastically reduce symptoms. Psych medication is not a cure, and it’s not for everyone who is struggling with mental illness. However, it can be a very powerful tool in recovery. For many people, they don’t need to stay on medication for life- it merely helps them by giving them the clarity of thought and mental stability to work on the rest of their lives and discover coping mechanisms. I think that it is incredible that symptoms of mental illness can be somewhat alleviated through medication. This can, in many situations, be life saving. Due to the rising need for mental health professionals, many people who seek medical treatment wait months to get in to see someone. This is a serious problem because many times, people wait until they can no longer manage their problems to see someone for them. Leaving problems for later only makes them worse, and the faster you address them the easier recovery is. When left untreated, mental illness intensifies and can even lead to suicidal or homicidal behavior. I hope to make a difference in the lives of those suffering from mental illness by showing love and compassion and helping them to reclaim their lives and learn to manage the mental illness holding them
