I chose the topic “should students have to wear school uniforms” and the leading concern here is whether children, kindergarten through high school, should be required by schools to wear a regulated uniform. I am on the side of implementing school uniforms into all schools systems across the country. My initial reasoning for choosing this side was based on my own personal research and experiences. However after reading up on the topic on procon.org I found that I agreed with many of their reasons listed. The first point opposed to my position is that the push for school uniforms is driven by commercial interests rather than educational ones. In trying to believe this point of view, School uniforms on one hand are meant to be a cheaper alternative to buying school clothes each year. Many of the studies produced to in favour of uniforms being cost affective are being funded by the clothing companies who are attempting to sell more product. If I really took notice and believed this view I would take a closer look at how the cost breaks down over time in comparison to just buying normal clothing. Uniforms are seen in almost every country in the world, but they are not really common in public schools in the United States. Some people think that wearing uniforms is a good idea while others oppose it. In my case, I had to wear uniforms at school when I started 1st grade up till my senior year in Vietnam. I found out that there are a lot of benefits for middle school and high school students when they are required to wear uniform at school in the United States.

One of the greatest controversies that is spreading throughout high schools in the United States is parents and their children against the enforcement of their school’s uniform policy. Rules contained in the policy that are implemented range from wearing certain types of tops (shirts) in specified colors to students being required to tuck in their shirts. In the past, uniforms were exclusively for students who attended private schools because they were “well-off”, but now uniforms are being seen more frequently in public schools on students of all economic levels. Having gone through a school system that considered adopting a uniform policy, I would have to press against the issue of mandated uniforms, because it is simply un-American and unjust.
In society today, school-age children are under tremendous pressure to fit in with their peers and still perform well academically. First, school uniforms eliminate opportunities for the ridicule of less popular or less fortunate students based on attire. Uniforms take the competition out of dressing. Students have been known to express themselves in flamboyant clothing. Price tags are in. Do you really want to be paying for a status symbol? A complaint by students is that uniforms reduce the freedom of expression. However, are we expressing ourselves through labeled clothing? Are we not just expressing a capitalist society in which everyone wears the same clothing that is priced higher due to its popularity and brand name? Is it righteous that the kid that cant afford these mainstream clothing is subject to ridicule? Uniforms just promote the peer pressure to perform and conform. Many students take after-school jobs to maintain their own style. Often these paychecks go to getting the “right” clothing instead of more important things such as saving for the future. The issue is not a part time job, but the reason behind the job is our concern. Is it not wrong that a student must waste his/her time working in order to get the right clothing and fit into society.
The most common argument against school uniforms is that they take away the students right to self-expression. Yes, school uniforms limit what the students have to wear, but students can still have their own ways of self-expression. Students can still express their style of choice with their hair and what accessories they wear. Their shoe choice is also a form of self-expression. Some parents also believe that it could interfere with students' natural behavior to experiment with different identities. I don’t think children or teens should have to wear school uniforms. It deprives them of their freedom of speech. They should have the right to wear what they want when they want. The uniforms are degrading and appalling. Everything would be dull and boring if everyone looked the same and wore the same stuff! Whatever happened to our U.S. Constitution? Some kids become stressed out and could get depressed because they cannot choose what they can wear, In Our own country? School Uniforms are a logical choice for the public school venue. Uniforms prevent students from a lower income background to be singled out for poorly made or cheap clothing, prevents use of gang colors, allows for certain safety measures, and allows teachers to form impressions of students based on actions and work rather than dress code choices.
