The money put in military spending is put into the military for many reasons some good and some bad. Some pros are that it is useful in stopping or at least minimizing foreign threats. Even though the threat from the Soviet Union has already been eliminated the country is still facing threats from smaller nations such as; Iraq, Iran, North Korea, Libya, Cuba, Syria and Sudan. It helps keep military preparation great, since readiness will decline if funds are not increased for training and equipment. It is critical to keep the military forces ready to fight and quickly win. It supports peacekeeping in foreign regions. For instance, it is used to fund unrealistic wars. Since the money is going into the current 2-war strategy. That is when the country is fighting two simultaneous wars with no help from the allies, which is very unrealistic. Also it is not balanced with foreign aid and diplomacy. Let me explain this for instance, if foreign aid and diplomacy budgets were more balanced with military spending there would be a better chance to prevent conflict and avoid military involvement. So to sustain a secure nation, federal spending must be balanced among military defense, economic security, healthcare, education and job training. Last but not least, the most obvious con is that the money might be used irresponsibly. For example, enlisted men and women who are having difficulties in supporting their families are helped with the military money. But what they receive needs to be a fair wage, adequate healthcare and housing. Financial support would be available for these needs, but it needs to be done more responsibly. Also we are putting money into anything we seem possible without good reason. My group decided that we totally agreed with reducing military spending. Now with the pros and cons listed up above you can see why we agreed with the idea. Everything that the military has based their spending off of is a bunch of "what ifs."
