One of the most popular social networking websites today is none other than Facebook. People use Facebook in order to stay connected with their friends, family and the people around them, to discover what’s going in the world, in addition to share and express what matters to them. The Social Network is a film on how Facebook was created. There was a series of events, character development, relationships and a series of different emotions that are shown throughout the film.
Social networking sites have been established as being an online environment where people who share “personal or professional interests, place of origin, education at a particular school, etc.” can connect (“social networking”). The most popular examples of these web communities are MySpace and Facebook, but these are only genetic mutations of their predecessors.
Today’s society is centered around social media, not just for sharing photos, articles, funny videos you see online, but to keep in touch with those near and far with a push of a button. We come to a day and age where you can be anywhere on the planet and still be able to message your best friend who is sitting in their house thousands of miles away. I will admit that I love using social media because I can see what my friends are up to and keep up to date with today’s problems. Everyone from teenagers to the elderly use Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter to show others what they may be up to or what they may have seen online. But the big question is “Is Facebook a fad?”.

Founded by Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook has connected multiple individuals across the world and even reunited some people with family members. Zuckerberg never imagined Facebook would grow so dramatically and have the impact it does on individuals across the world. Facebook allows it’s users to update statuses, upload photos, post videos, and even instant message others. For example, if some teenagers were at a shopping mall, they could update their status to let others know they were shopping. They could even post pictures in their favorite stores. This all could happen within only a few seconds. Today, more than nine-hundred people use Facebook monthly (Pros 2013). That number is continuing to grow. More specifically, fifty-seven percent of American adults use Facebook. In addition, seventy-three percent of teenagers are Facebook users (King

However, although Facebook could be great way to use to connect with friends and maintain good relationships with people it can cause more harm than benefits. I do believe that Facebook became part of who we are.
The popular site, Facebook.com, has amassed more than one billion registrants since it started in February 2004. It is another social networking site, just like MySpace.com and Xanga.com, which is common to High School and College students. But this is no ordinary site; people’s lives literally revolve around Facebook. I have a Facebook account and log in at least once a day. I personally believe that Facebook is a fun and interactive site. However, some students may not feel that same way because they have encountered some negative aspects, aside from Facebook’s legal problems.
Social networks are now widespread in our world; with existing social networks expanding, social networking sites are being created for educators, medical professionals all accessible 24 hours a day via computer, tablet, smart phone, and Internet-enabled devices. Challengers of social networking say that the sites prevent face-to-face communication, waste time on frivolous activity and spread false and potentially dangerous information. One of the activities that consume children is their homework. In fact, for a better understanding of the concepts taught in class the educational system requires homework in any class from 1st grade to 12th grade. Children are asked to do homework once they get home;however, with the increase in popularity of Facebook, they are more interested in signing on this network to chat with their friends or play games rather than completing their homework. In addition, the considerable amount of time spent on Facebook prevent children from participating in any kind of extracurricular activities. These activities foster their abilities to learn and develop important skills. This disinterest of being involved in an activity in favor of spending some time on Facebook, may harm a children’s physical and psychological well-being. Moreover, children who spend an important amount of time on social networking website are more likely to lack sleep. This lack of rest and sleep prevent children from being focused in class, to have the required amount of sleep a child should have and thus impact heir health and ability to learn. In “Facebook® and academic performance”, Kirschner and Karpinski examined the general impact of technology on academic achievement and development of children and teens declare that “Students who reported Internet-caused schoolwork problems were found to have spent five times more hours online than those who did not, and they were also significantly more likely to report that their Internet use caused them to stay up late, get less sleep, and miss classes.” (1240). Clearly, the amount of time spent on Facebook has a considerable effect on children’s ability to learn, to be involved in any kind of outside of class activities and diminish their hours of sleep as well. It is valuable to note that this can may be crucial for their educational
