In her essay, Nelson introduces a term “image flow,” it describes the phenomena that information comes and goes so fast makes people lack of time to understand and justice the authentic. The provost of the university tried to rely on the iPod experiment to start their educational innovation for a digital age for incoming students. Every incoming student could get a new iPod and the university wondered how students utilize their iPods as tools for their study. The result was amazing. Students from different majors could utilize their iPods in different situations. Their learning and self-study became much more efficient than before. Medical students could use iPods for practicing their heart hearing skills, music students use iPods to upload compositions for self-listening and self-critique, and engineering students mangle and dissect iPods to study (50). This example shows that social media could practice independent thinking. Nobody teach student how to utilize IPods in their study. But they independently find effective ways to work on their own study. New forms of study are good samples of changing in education career. Technology today is more relied upon than ever before. If one needs to call someone half way around the world, simply take out a cell phone and dial their number. Within thirty seconds, one can be speaking to that person just as if two people were conversing face-to-face. In the same manner, one has access to endless knowledge and resources by the push of a few buttons or the click of a mouse. The use of social media today is becoming more prevalent than ever before because of the convenience it offers.
It has been forty three years since the first email was delivered; since then, our ways of communication have changed. We are now living in a society in which almost everybody is provided with a piece of communicating technology to keep in touch with each other. Social networking service, a platform for people who want to share interests, activities, backgrounds or real-life connections over the Internet, has deeply affected our life in many ways. So, how does social media affect our lives? Speaking for myself, I think social networking is slowly damaging our everyday life by crawling into our personal life, turning into a deadly weapon, and becoming a dangerous addiction and distraction.
With the use of social media, people are becoming more connected every day. However, people are dived on whether or not this connection is helpful or harmful. Social media might help some people express how they feel. However, it makes us a self-centered culture. Technology made us more selfish and we have become more separate from people because we are shorthing texts and taking selfies all the time (Doc 7). We don’t even look up when someone is talking to us we don’t even look up from our phones and then we don’t build empathy from them. (Doc 3). It has also weakened our ability to focus on tasks because there are engineers programming your phone every minute to keep you on it (Doc 12). In overall technology is making all of us self-center by not noticing people when we talk to them and we can’t even focus on one task for long amount of time.
