The project sponsor has so many responsibilities to take care of. Every project needs a project sponsor and every project sponsor have certain roles and duties to perform on a day –to –day basis. A successful project sponsor stands between the project’s success and failure. He behaves as an escalation point in situations where project managers couldn’t handle and fall beyond control. A forceful job can lead to a project failure. Executives are not meant to be project sponsors. A lot of experience is needed to lead the project, engage with the team, manage financial resources, monitor the project, motivate the team, approve and take decisions which involve higher risks. The project sponsors should also be able to understand and resolve the consequences when a decision fails.The project sponsor is the bridge between the team, project manager, and executives and stakeholders. He is the people who can sell the project. A project requires a project sponsor from start phase to end phase. Any successful or failed projects depend on teamwork and one person cannot be appreciated or blamed for its success or failure. It is true that a project sponsor can be the difference for a projects ultimate result, but there are so many other factors involved that leads to the result. There are several stages in a project that can either lead to success if executed according to the plan or failure if not implemented properly. The project sponsors have to behave according to the project stage. At the beginning of the project, it is the sponsor's responsibility to set objectives and goals, choose the project manager, set priorities. In the second stage, the sponsor has to ensure planning has been done accordingly, deal with the stakeholders and develop a relationship with them. In the executing stage, set up effective communication, maintain the quality, and maintain the relationship with stakeholders. The final stage which is closing stage should be used to identify the lessons learned and realize the benefits and capabilities. A project sponsor could set standards, motivate and mentor the PM, deal with the risks, maintains the quality do whatever it takes to ensure a successful project, still there are many other factors that can affect the project and can lead to failure.
