Working memory and attention are processes at the core of what we mean when we say we are “thinking.” Understanding the nature of representations held in working memory is of fundamental importance for understanding the limits to conscious cognition. The concept of working memory often includes both the shortterm maintenance of task-relevant information and the active rehearsal and manipulation of this information (Cohen et al., 1997; Smith & Jonides, 1999). Short term memory can only hold a limited capacity of information at a short period of time. It is also known as the working memory. It records all the current happenings. Procedural memory guides the processes we perform and most frequently resides below the level of conscious awareness. When needed, procedural memories are automatically retrieved and utilized for the execution of the integrated procedures involved in both cognitive and motor skills; from tying shoes to flying an airplane to reading. Procedural memories are accessed and used without the need for conscious control or attention. Procedural memory is a type of long-term memory and, more specifically, a type of implicit memory. Procedural memory is created through "procedural learning" or, repeating a complex activity over and over again until all of the relevant neural systems work together to automatically produce the activity. It is proposed that episodic memories consist of episodic elements, summary records of experience often in the form of visual images, associated to a conceptual frame that provides a conceptual context. Episodic memories are embedded in a more complex conceptual system in which they can become the basis of autobiographical memories. However, the function of episodic memories is to keep a record of progress with short-term goals and access to most episodic memories is lost soon after their formation.
