Problem Statement
The goal of Tesla is to have autonomous cars within the next five years. Equipped with cameras, sensors, processors, and satellite, they drive without human involvement. In fact, without human involvement, the number of accidents decrease and fewer lives are lost. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (2017), distracted drivers killed 3,477 and injured 391,000 people in 2015. A distraction is defined as any activity that takes a driver’s attention away from driving, In short, a simple drink of water is a diversion, but the most significant hindrance is texting.
In mid 2017, Consumer Reports rated Tesla Model S the best ultra-luxury car earning a perfect score of 100 (Valdes-Depena, 2017). Conversely,

Running a traffic light, speeding, and illegal passing are examples of quick reactions that a human driver can detect. Human reflex kicks in, but a computer has to be programmed in order for it to react using an effective approach with a position ending. For the most part, humans detect adverse road conditions such as ice, snow, sleet, and fog making a decision to stay off the road or to proceed with caution. On the contrary, the computer cannot detect what type of obstacle and low level ones are harder to recognize. In the case of detours or road closings, the Tesla relies on an extensive up-to-date mapping …show more content…
I will wire two remote cars with vehicle-to-vehicle communication and programmed using C++ coding.
Research question: What is the reaction time (in seconds) and distance traveled (in meters) to avoid a given obstacle in the path of an autonomous car to prevent collisions?
My data is quantitative. I will create a data table with figures and graphs that include the obstacle used, the distance the car was from the object when it first began to stop, the time it took the vehicle to stop, the speed it was traveling (meters per second), and the distance traveled when stopping.
Imagine that your car could detect hazardous roads before you could sense it? A feature that provides this type of protective driving exists within European cars. This valuable safety feature that is offered in European cars i...
GM is already producing the technology catering to the autonomous driving system in instalments as each new car produced, displays a prototype of a sophisticated “assisted driving” feature. Drivers of the Cadillac ATS sedan, a mid-sized car with a driver assistance, can now leave it to drive itself and maintain a safe distance in steady traffic. It can also measure a parking space and steer itself into it, read traffic signals, and warn the driver if he breaks the speed limit. Emergency brakes that overrule the driver’s actions in the case of an accident, add to special features that will be seen in automatic cars.
The term “distracted driving” may be hard to define, but, simply, it is the act of driving while being engaged in any activity. Stephanie Hanes describes in her article, how texting is a deadly epidemic. The distractions occurring while we drive on the road endangers the lives of drivers and passengers around us. Andrew Lavallee explains in his article “Companies build Services to End Texting and Driving,” how texting is wildly popular these days. David Andreatta points out some activities which drivers are engaged in while on road, in his article “Texting and Driving Can Spell Disaster.”
Have you ever been on a cell phone while driving or seen someone on his or her cell phone while driving? This is distracted driving at its finest. Whether you are looking at a text, changing radio stations, applying makeup, or anything else that takes your mind or eyes off the road is distracted driving. Distracted driving killed around 3,000 people in 2011 (Bauers). Car crashes are the leading cause of teenagers in the United States. If you don’t think you are distracted behind the wheel think again, many people think they aren’t distracted till something bad happens to them, like a crash, driving into a ditch, or running a red light and get a ticket for it. Distracted driving is a major problem and most people don’t know their distracted or what is a distraction to him or her.
Distracted driving is an increasing and significant threat in the United States. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (2016), visual, manual, and cognitive diversions are the three principal types of distraction: visual diversion is taking the eyes off the road; manual distraction is taking the hands off the wheel, and cognitive diversion is taking the mind off of driving. Many diversions activities contribute to divert drivers such as eating, using a cell phone and texting while driving which is the most dangerous practice because it combines the three types of distraction.
Distracted driving: the practice of driving a motor vehicle while engaged in another activity. Anything besides focusing on the road can be considered distracted driving. Most people would think that the only real distraction while driving is the use of a cell phone, however, that is entirely untrue. There are people that give the term, distracted driving, a whole new meaning. People do everything from fixing their makeup to shaving while driving in their cars. Distracted driving is one of the leading causes of car crashes in the United States.
Distracted driving is a growing problem among today’s drivers. Since the advancements in technology, and the more hectic a person's schedule the more distracted the are likely to become. Distracted driving is any activity that diverts attention from driving, including talking or texting on your phone, eating and drinking, talking to people in your vehicle, fiddling with the stereo, entertainment or navigation system—anything that takes your attention away from the task of safe driving The concern with being distracted while driving is not being able to react to hazards on the road or becoming the hazard on the road that another distracted driver may not be able to avoid. The three main distractions are categorized as manual, visual, and cognitive according to the DMV.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), fatalities involving a vehicle have reduced by 64% from 1994 to 2013[2]. Many of these accidents are avoidable and some occur in a variety of situations. These situations include times when a distracted driver collides with a vehicle in its blind spot while attempting to change lanes, or fails to notice a stopped vehicle ahead to properly apply the brakes in time. Through the aid of modern technology, more accidents can be avoided. Automotive Sixth Sense is a transformation of non-autonomous vehicles into autonomous vehicles. Automotive Aftermarket Automatic Accident Avoidance Apparatus (A6th) will help to reduce collisions. This aftermarket product accomplishes goals
A word has started to appear in discussions of driving. The word is "distracted." It refers to drivers who pay more attention to their cell phones, or their text messages, than they do to driving. The results can be fatal. One of the most common distractions today is texting. Each day in the United States, 9 people are killed and more than 1,060 people are injured in crashes that are reported to involve a distracted driver (Center). A couple of months ago, I and a friend were sitting at a red light waiting on green. We were talking about making plans for later that evening. We decided what to do as soon as the light turned green, we waited on the car in front of us to ease off the line. Then we were hit. This turned into a five car pileup. The driver of the fifth car back was texting at the red light; he hit the gas too quick and ended up hitting the next car, pushing them into the next, and so on. When the officer got there he questioned the man. The man admitted to texting behind the wheel, said he thought the light was green, and hit the gas. Three people were critically injured due to texting. “Texting is a very dangerous distraction, it is now more common than drinking and driving” (Gozzi). We all know drinking and driving is a very serious thing, but so is texting while driving. As a society, we just don’t see it that way.
What is distracted driving? Distracted driving is any activity that diverts a person’s attention away from the task of driving. All distractions endanger the driver, passenger and bystander safety Types of

Companies like Google, Tesla and Nissan, among others, have announced over the past few years that their companies are trying to develop self-driving or autonomous cars [Ref. 1 and 2]. Self-driving cars can provide many benefits to the average consumer. Studies have shown that because computers can react and process information many times faster than a human being, crashes on streets and roads can be decreased with quick and consistent evasion maneuvers by the autonomous car. They can also help maximize fuel economy by calculating the most direct and fastest routes. When the driving of an autonomous car demonstrates that the computer can safely and reliably transport the passengers to their destination, this frees up the passengers to do other things that they would not normally be able to do if they were driving the car manually. For this reason, self-driving cars can help maximize productivity of their passengers.
Mitigating the Threat of Cell Phone Use While Driving A major threat to the safety of people on road ways are distracted drivers. Distracted driving is any activity that could divert a person's attention away from the primary task of driving. All distractions endanger driver, passenger, and bystander safety. ("Key Facts").
Distracted driving is defined as “any activity that could divert a person's attention away from the primary task of driving.” Teenagers and young adults are not the only drivers who are guilty of driving while distracted. Several studies have shown that adults are more likely to text while driving than teen drivers. Distracted driving is quickly becoming one of the leading causes of traffic accidents. Any activity a driver engages in while driving that takes his or her focus off the road can be dangerous, even engaging in a conversation with other passengers.
Technology is evolving faster than ever these days, however there is one technology that could revolutionize the transportation industry. This technology is called autonomous cars, also known as self-driving cars. Autonomous cars can be defined as a vehicle that is capable of sensing its environment, and navigating without human input. Using different techniques such as GPS and radar, autonomous cars can detect surroundings, thus removing the human element in driving. This would have a positive effect in more ways than we could ever imagine. Research suggests that self-driving cars will become more abundant in the future because they will be more cost-effective, enhance safety, and decrease traffic congestion.
