Principles of assessment and how they can assist in developing student achievement.

Teachers strive to assist each and every student to make positive achievements, a major aspect to this is the role or assessment and feedback provided to the student.
Reporting can come in various forms, schools generally use a combinations of summative and formative assessments strategies. As defined by the New South Wales Boars of Studies reporting is “the process of communicating information between the student, parents and the teacher about various aspects of the student’s development” (Brady & Kennedy, 2005, p.100). An effective teacher will constantly review their teaching practices, identifying the way students respond and their results from the programs administered by their teachers. By constantly administering assessments to review their teaching students will be less likely to struggle as content will be up to date and appropriate to the students. Assessment needs to be given to the students in a clam and collective manner. Teachers should strive to reduce the stress of assessments; this often limits student’s potential. Teachers need to incorporate both formative and summative assessment strategies. During the beginning of a lesson topic it is important to track the progress being made by the students. Teachers need to constantly assess what topics are the students grasping and moving forward with and on the other hand which areas is extra help or teaching required. This is the role of formative assessment, which ultimately plays the role of monitoring the learning progress (Gronlund, 1993, p.5). There has been extensive study into the role of assessment and the principles that govern it. From the various sources, they all deliver similar aspects of what assessment and reporting should be. Brady & Kennedy (2005) give a general summary of the principles for reporting. Some of these principles allude to the role of communication in assessment. Ultimately assessment is a means of communicating with the students to build their awareness of what they know and what they need to improve on. Above all assessment needs to be fair, it needs to assess its objectives and provide understandable results which can generate informative feedback. Having a fair assessment will ensure the results are accurate, it is for that reason this reason that teachers must ensure that results have come from careful planning and who the results concern are aware of what is expected and are given the resources and opportunities to have the knowledge and understandings to achieve successful results in
