Homosexuality in the past was looked as deviant to the majority of society. There has been some changes toward people's views about homosexuals, but still today, there are some individuals who believe it is a perversion and an abomination. The movie, Prayer for Bobby, recaps on how the power of ones society's beliefs had an influence on families, especially how it influenced Bobby Griffith's family. I will discuss the three most important topics in the movie, describe how society has contributed to those issues, and discuss what can be done to alleviate or eliminate those issues.

Women were allowed to work, but their positions were to fill low paying jobs. Women were able to have a job, but their most important job was still to bear children to expand the population. Women also were in charge of the household duties. This included cooking, cleaning, taking care of the children's needs and other necessities of daily living. The functions of a man was to be the head of the household. They make all decisions about how money was spent, where the family lived, and all other important decisions for the family. Most families were very close together and they functioned together as one. What kept families so close together was mainly their religion. Religion is intended to provide emotional support and to answer questions about the unknown (Basirico et al. 2009). Whenever a situation occurred, most people turned to their religion to find solutions. Religion, according to the structure functionalism is an institution that performs its required duties to society (Basirico et al. 2009). Most families' norms and culture formed from their religion and because of this anything out of the norm, like homosexuality, is considered deviant and abnormal. With this in mind, societies have discriminated against homosexuals because the majority are heterosexuals who are religious. The majority has the power to decide what is considered right and wrong. Because of this, conflict arises and the majority resists change. The majority of society interprets the bible how homosexuality is wrong because it is not accepted by God, and it defeats the purpose of people reproducing and creating life. Homosexuals deal between the conflict of what their religion tells them and what is the reality.
