Heroism. The act of courage, selflessness, strength, determination. Some people are born heroes, some become heroes, and others are simply not fit to be a hero. Ponyboy Curtis is a 14 year old boy that transforms from a tuff greaser to a selfless hero. He lives on the “wrong side of the tracks” with his two older brothers Darry and Sodapop. When you live on the “wrong side of the tracks” you are considered a greaser. A greaser is someone that is poor and part of a gang, that gang usually does illegal things. The Socs are quite similar except for the fact that they are rich, snobby, and have everything handed to them on a silver platter. During this part of the novel, Johnny kills Bob because he was drowning Ponyboy. Then, they decide to run away. “You really killed him, huh, Johnny?” Then Johnny responds, ‘Yeah,’ “His voice quavered slightly,” “I had to they were drowning you, Pony. They might have killed you’(57). They are so shaken up by all the events that had just occurred that they decide to run away which starts the stage of the separation. When they run away, it stirs up all kinds of problems they would have never suspected. Such as where to get money, how to get money, what to use the money for. They have to be especially careful because what if anyone sees them, and recognizes them and turns them into the police. Despite all of the problems they decide to leave the “known” and enter the “unknown”.The separation is when they leave all that is known to them, their gang, Darry, Soda, etc. and they travel into the unknown. This step in the Hero’s Journey is important because to become a hero he needs to separate from the known. He needs to do this because to discover new things outside of his world and his life, he has to venture out and go the “unknown”. He will then see things differently.
