Ideologies about women have historically distorted the nature of women as workers. Over time, the politics of housework have created material and ideological consequences for domestic work as well as sex work. The politics of housework have created a stigma surrounding certain fields of work as well as outcaste many women. Material and ideological consequence exist for housework as well as sex work and domestic work, due to housework politics. This paper will examine ideologies about women that formed the politics of housework, as well as the way in which the politics of housework have created consequences for women, sex workers, and domestic workers.

Even though, criminalization of sex work violates basics of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, sex work is criminalized in most areas. Additionally, “criminalization of sex work, by definition, criminalizes adult consensual sexual behavior. By doing so, it creates a smokescreen which obscures actual abuse, violence and exploitation.” Similarly, to how non-females speak toward the woman’s experience in the realm of housework, non-sex workers are notorious for speaking about the sex work experience. Even though only sex workers are experts of the industry, there is this idea and presumption of prostitutes. Additionally, there are penalties associated with communicating about sex work, which has discouraged sex workers from being empowered to speak and stand up for themselves. However, as time has gone on, more sex workers have stepped forward to educate others on the harm of their generalizations and ridicule. The International Union of Sex Workers states that, “those who ignore our voices and dismiss the complexity of our experiences are part of creating the very problem they say they wish to solve.” Because of the ridicule and the belittling attitude of society toward sex workers, sex workers are not afforded the right of safe working conditions, and what should be keeping them safe, laws and the police, are key players in putting them at risk.
