Police play a vital role in maintaining safety and welfare at all levels of government and across the country. Policing can also be described as an aspect of overseeing others to ensure that they keep to law and order. Policing is about helping people and maintaining community quality of life as it is about enforcing laws and apprehending criminals. The most important work of the police is to enforce public orders and enforce the law. While crime fighting is an essential role of law enforcement, it is not the most prevalent, and in the view of many, not the most important. Officers spend far more time engaged in the provision of far ranging non-law enforcement services. In enforcing the law, the police force also helps to maintain public order. Diversity in the police force is one of the most important aspects that should be looked at. This is due to the effect that it's likely to have on the overall perception and the effectiveness of the police force.
It has been shown that there is increasing malfunctioning of the police force as a result of lack of faith and mistrust between different ethnic groups depending on the way they feel represented in the force.

It ensures those individuals are given a space to practice their individual rights, but in doing so, they do not interfere with the rights of others to practice their rights also. The public service function is one of the most important aspects of the function of the police. In servicing the public, the police, therefore, are involved in an array of activities that are meant to ensure an enabling atmosphere of life in the public. In this regard, they integrate important functions like managing and directing traffic, directing tourists, attending to emergencies, and other functions beyond their normal function of arresting and container law
Minorities and Policing: Unfairly Treated If we look at the past, we can see that there is no warm tradition of community cooperation between the African-American community and law enforcement. Minorities and Policing is an important topic because it deals with issues pertaining to how minorities are treated by the police. Racial profiling and social injustice are important areas when dealing with unfair treatment of minorities. 1.
Police officer normally works with community as a team and addresses any problems; they find a solution to that problem. In 21st century the police officer was required to work closely with communities to make sure maintain of social order and build relationship in order to effectively fight against crime. However, majority of racial and ethnic groups targets of abusive treatment at the hands of police. Minority groups have always been underrepresented in police forces across the United States. One of the main reasons minority groups are underrepresented in police department is due to the negative interaction White officers have had with citizens of minority groups. According to McNamara and Burns (2008), members of minority groups feel police officers abuse of their authority by overstepping the boundaries of procedural laws, which dictates how the police are to use their powers. The conflicts between minorities and White officers has caused many individuals from minority groups to not be attracted to the police work. Moreover, individuals from minority groups do not apply for police work because they feel they would not be accepted in policing,
"Relations between the police and minority groups are a continuing problem in many multiracial societies. Surveys consistently document racial differences in perceptions of the police, with minorities more likely than whites to harbor negative views." (Weitzer and Tuch, Race and Perceptions of Police Misconduct, 2004)
In correlation in examining other important elements in community policing, importance is placed on the people and their concerns. The ideology of law enforcement shifts from a crime fighting role to a service related role. Also, the sole responsibility of crime control is shared between the police, the citizens, and other civic organizations. Finally, not only is crime addressed, but also crime control, quality of life issues, and social issues as

In today’s society, the United States is a melting pot of diversity. It is filled with many different cultures, languages, and beliefs. As these diverse aspects of people’s lives fill the city, suburbs and the country, police officers must adapt to these changes in their community. If police departments do not adapt or are slow at adapting to their community’s diversity they can come upon many barriers that can make their duties more challenging. The two most prominent barriers that exist between the police and their community are language barriers and cultural barriers (Miller, Hess, Orthmann, 2014).
“The police are the people and the people are the police” those words, said by Sir Robert Peel, the father of community policing, describe how a well ran city and police department should be. The people of the community should feel comfortable enough with its own police department to act as the police department’s eyes. A police department can only afford to pay so many police officers, that it is virtually impossible to bring justice to all the wrong doings in the community. That is where the community comes into play, by acting as the eyes of the police force. In order for this to happen the community needs to feel comfortable and at home with the police force. This means that a police department has to
The primary duty of a police officer is to protect the public (Duties of a Police Officer. 2015.). To accomplish this task, police officers are assigned specific job duties on a daily basis, which vary depending on the size and type of their department. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, common duties of a police officer include patrolling designated areas, answering calls for help, enforcing laws, arresting suspected criminals, issuing citations, testifying in court and conducting traffic stops. Police officers also complete detailed reports regarding incidents after all traffic stops or house calls (Duties of a Police Officer.
According to Wonders (2009), understanding that difference is socially constructed is a critical first in ensuring justice in a democratic society (p.14). In today’s American society, where high profile cases of unarmed black males dying at the hands of the police permeate the media, this critical first step is more important than ever. Recent events across the country have highlighted the lack of diversity in police departments and other law enforcement agencies. Across the nation are acute differences between the makeup of local police forces and the demographics of the communities they serve (“Diversity In Law”, 2015). A lack of diversity in the police and other criminal justice departments may have harmful consequences for everyone involved.
Law enforcement is a career that is both violent and rewarding in many capacities. Justice needs to be served in law enforcement and they have a responsibility to uphold the law and serve the people in the community. Law enforcement is crucial in the world today as a global realm as life continues to be more complex and law enforcement struggles to combat many aspects of crime. In order to combat these problems and have a positive future in the criminal justice system, everyone must work together on a bigger scale.
make police work more effective and efficient. Hanser and Gomila (2015) noted, “The criminal justice system does not operate in a social vacuum; rather, it is directly impacted by this sense of rapid and continual cultural change” (p. 7). In light of globalization, law enforcement organizations must change the way it operates in a world where criminal activities and terrorism are more geographically diverse and sophisticated.
The lack of training police officers is causing unnecessary incidents, is it true? Does the lack of Critical thinking, values, Ethics and Understanding the role as a police officer contribute to hire number of incidents? There is a chance that answer to this questions might always be divided, why? Well because officers will tend to defend their side and how the view the problem and the public will also defend their side and how they view the problem, for example most officers would probably say that people do not comply with their orders or the public might outcry because of the use of excessive force, it is most certain that there will never be an agreement on who is wright or wrong. Regardless of the outcome of who is wright
The role of the police service is to “uphold the law fairly and firmly; to prevent crime; to pursue and bring to justice those who break the law; to keep the Queen’s peace; to protect, help and reassure the community; and to be seen to do this with integrity, common sense and sound judgement” (Saulsbury; Newburn 1996, p.xii) to further protect the life, liberty and property of the people. The police are primarily responsible for covering activities such as catching criminals, maintaining public order, and to provide a balance between crime prevention and investigation to major issues such as terrorism and organised crime (Newburn, 2008). This should constantly be taken into account regularly by every member of the police force, as a guide to his own conduct. This essay will be highlighting and explaining the key roles of the police.
