Engineering is an occupation that deals with the building and designing of new or improved products. To succeed in the field you have to skills in science, math and technology. You must also be able to look at problems from a creative perspective to solve them. The unique challenge this poses is what draws me to the field. Engineering demands a specialized education that can begin as early as kindergarten. More schools are beginning to emphasize math and science classes by implementing a program called “STEM”. STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. This program was created to encourage students to pursue careers in these fields to fill the demand for them. Some examples of these are chemists, doctors,engineers, astronauts, programmers, and many more. (STEM center) Another such program that can prepare you is “Project Lead The Way”. To give experience, many colleges offer hands-on laboratory time. These classes teach math, hardware makeup and architecture, and programming languages, among other things. Every state requires hardware engineers to have licenses. To get this license, one must have a degree from an engineering program approved by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology; for example, the Electrical and Computer Engineering bachelor’s degree program at the New York Institute of Technology, containing ?, among many others. Graduates of such a course also need four years of relevant job experience, and then to pass a State exam. Even after the course, work, and test, education is not over. Engineering is entirely different from science. Scientists attempt to comprehend nature whereas engineers attempt to make things that do not exist in nature. Engineers push advancement and development. To exemplify an invention an engineer must put his/her ideas in concrete terms and construct something that a society, community or even a nation can utilize. That something can be a mind boggling design, gadget, a contraption, a material, a strategy, a computing program, an innovation experiment, a new solution to a problem or an improvement of what already exists. Since a design must be practical and useful, it must have its geometry, measurements and characteristics data illustrated. Usually in their first year, a student will be put into a special program that starts the course load with math and science. These are the basis for every engineer’s education. After the first two years of the program, the student chooses exactly what field of engineering he or she would like and finishes out their degree concentrating on that particular field. Towards the end of their college career, the student will usually be offered a job by recruitment or they are hired after they graduate. Those great revolutionaries all had ideas and solved problems which are still qualities that engineers of this day and age use. Webster defines engineering as, “the work of designing and creating large structures or new products or systems by using scientific methods.” Those people created new products so they would today be considered engineers, but they are slightly different. What makes them different is the field that they would be considered a part of. The broadest one of the oldest forms is mechanical engineering, which is my future profession.
In the most basic sense, engineering means “making things happen.” It is the practical application of science and math, the two subjects I am most passionate about, to solve everyday problems.
