Pit bulls historically have been used as hunting and working dogs, but few people think of one when they hear the words "service dog." Golden Retrievers, Labrador Retrievers and German Shepherd Dogs tend to be the most popular breeds used to assist disabled persons. Pit bulls, however, are loyal, adaptable canines suited to almost any kind of work and can make wonderful service dogs. Unfortunately, a great deal of fear and misconception swirl around this breed, and owning a pit bull service dog evokes unique societal and legal issues.
In recent years it has been the pit bull which has come under the scrutiny of legislative bodies, as their reputation becomes more and more sullied by street crime. To say “pit bull,” however, is a vague reference to several pit bull types, which are considered separate breeds by registries like the American Kennel Club (AKC). Also the media will say that the attack is from a Pit Bull when it is just mutt or some other kind of dog. They do this because it is what people expect to see. The current popular television show “Pit Bulls and Parolees” is combating the negative image of Pit Bulls, that the media has portrayed for so long. The show is a positive example of how Pit Bulls can be rehabilitated, while at the same time helping parolees to adjust back into society, giving both the dog and the parolee a new purpose in life. Armando Christian Perez, otherwise known as Pitbull, was born in Miami, Florida on January 14, 1981. At a young age his parents divorced and he was raised by his mother until she found out about his drug dealing business. Once his secret was revealed his mother placed him in the foster system and he then grew up with a family in Roswell, Georgia. Do you ever wish that could bring your dog into a store with you? Well, people with service dogs wish they could too. A person with a service dog is defined as a person who needs assistance because of their disability. A disability can range from blindness, to psychiatric disorders, and chronic pain. Service dogs have been refused entry into public businesses and restaurants, because they are dogs. Businesses owners refuse service dogs, since they believe they are disruptive messy. We are supposed to be an accepting, friendly society, yet we won’t even let people with service dogs into public businesses.
Service dogs are another form of Animal Assisted Therapy. For example, a person that is deaf can own a hearing dog. “In these circumstances, a hearing dog can offer ameliorative benefits aside from alerting the caregiver to the phone ringing. A dog, being a full-time companion, ends up being a conversational partner that responds behaviorally to the statements and moods of other people nearby” (Fine 67). The dog becomes more than just a pet, but acts as a family member that takes full-time care of you.

Currently, pit bulls have been reported by the media with very horrific and disturbing news of having attacked a child or being shot by a police due to aggression while some are reported to have been abused or neglected by its owners (Forderer and Unkelbach 534). And because the reports keep coming with heated discussions, more and more people have forged a frightening image of pit bulls even to the extreme of refusing to take care of such breed. Pit bull advocates claim that the dogs get a bad reputation considering that people should learn the dogs are not inherently aggressive. What the pit bull advocates would like to point is that the owners of the pit bulls should be considered guilty for mishandling of their own dogs. There are owners of pit bulls that even encourage the dog to be aggressive in order to fight and protect them in a wrong manner and wrong degree of training (Forderer and Unkelbach 536). Pit bull advocates claimed that a well socialized and well trained pit bull would be very intelligent and could be one of the gentle dogs imaginable.
I don't believe Pitt bulls are born to be mean. In every litter of pups that any breed of dog has there is one out of the litter that has a dominate side to it as well as one that is shy. Pit bulls are no different than the other breeds. Their master determines the behavior and aggressiveness, just as any other breed of dog's behavior. Pit bulls are gentle dogs if trained and raised properly. They like to be lap dogs as well as receive and give attention to their masters.
Usually, the media only reports bad things about pit bulls without ever showing the good of pit bulls. This makes these dogs look down upon by people who have never been around or cared for one. Not only does this make them have a bad reputation, but it makes pit bulls least likely to be cared for or owned just because of that. Many people often say that even though some are well-behaved, most of them are dangerous and should be banned from being owned. Their defense to back this argument up would be because that pit bulls are “bred” to be killers, that they attack more than any other breed, and that they especially put their owners at risk because they are more likely to attack them than others. Most people that say this are not very informed of what a pit bull really is. These dogs are no different from other breeds and many people who own a pit bull know that. Many other people are not aware that pit bulls have many traits that make them like any other dog. These traits make them to be great service dogs, and just like any ordinary dog, to be the great pet that they can be, they also need to be respected and well cared for like any other
Although this fact is not specific to the Pit-Bull breed it is, however, an extremely important truth to remember in any animal situation. Pit-bulls are a cross-bread of Terrier and Bulldog breeds that were bread together starting in the late 1700’s. They were first used to dig out vermin and herd stray cattle, but this breed can be trained for so much more; guide, law enforcement, military, search and rescue, and service dogs are the most suitable options for training these mild beasts (Tullis 54).
